back in the day... when I used to session up places on my skate, we used to chill out and watch skate videos afterwards. In those days Hosoi was pretty much acknowledged as being 'the man'... everything was tight... but I always felt it looked too precise, too mechanical... it never, ever looked like he was really pushing himself to the full extent of his abilities... which is why I always preferred to watch guys like Gonz, Kaupas, Way, Lucero and Vallely... Gonz especially... that guy just freakin' went for it.

Jeff Mills is like that. I saw him perform live on three decks -with a 909 in Kalamazoo, Michigan back in the summer of '98. It was ridiculous... he's not afraid to blow a mix in order to try something new... and he's always going for it. Check out the Exhibitionist dvd... I think the Purposemaker mix is an excerpt from that - but there are a handful of others on there - all shot with multiple cameras, so you can change the angle and get a better understanding of what he's doing and how he's doing it... and the speed at which it's all happening... for a lot of those mixes he's pretty much cueing live... finding a start point - dropping the track in then adjusting the pitch on the fly.

anyhow... if people are into that sort of techno mixing, then I'd highly recommend checking out Algorhythm, Murat, Titonton and Claude Young... among others.

The reason you can't have 70 psytrance songs in one mix is that a good psy track needs adequate build up time... good psy tracks build themselves up to the final minute and if you cut a track out after only a minute or so, you'll never be able to get into it properly.
I was a partyer long before I was a DJ and I mix the way I want to hear others mix when I'm dancing. Psytrance has a vibe to it unlike some other styles, the bass and kick and percussions are all saying something to your mind to make you dance, feeling the power of the bass making your insides vibrate is half the experience for me, it just feels good.
I suppose if you did a LOT of work before your set identifying a 3 minute or so 'peak' of each track, you could maximize the number of tracks in your set, but this isn't hip hop or breaks that typically have songs that are only 3-5 minutes to begin with. It's a characteristic of the style that stipulates a better set when you let a good song play out. Most people who go to psy parties know their music as well and I can tell you right now that the worst thing that can happen is hearing your song come in only for the DJ to mix into another song before the best part, it's damn near insulting. It's the equivalent of cutting out a rap song in the middle of a verse. It's like, the word never gets it's rhyme; it would be unfulfilling to mix psytrance that way.
I'm feeling feelings right now..

That's just my opinion man, I apply it everytime I DJ.
Good tracks, seemless transitions and NOT taking a song out while it's in it's prime. Of course, if a song is playing that's just not getting the crowd into, I'll switch it out early.
Every DJ should pay as much attention to the crowd as to his equipment.

Is Deadfunk even a DJ? I don't think he is, he may be a kick ass producer tho.

Also, I'd love for you to quote me gloating anywhere on this board. And say you do find me doing that, how does that define me as a DJ? I have plenty of confidence but a huge ego? Yeah I guess. A DJ has to act the act and look the look, not act all shy and modest. However, I personally don't care what a DJ does so long as the music is good and the mixing is near flawless.

I, on the other hand, do agree with his statement and remember myself saying stuff like "fuck, i can't believe he cut out the best part of the track"..

Kallan, why are you so anti-Zed all the time man?? :)

As for Mike, You have been gloating alot latly i have to admit. Just using the term "I" too often can be seen as gloating.. even if your intent isn't to say "i'm the best DJ".. sometimes just saying "I mix my tracks" can sound like "you can't even mix, but i can" !!

words are words, but use caution some times.. or you end up with everyone talking behind your back all the time. Trust me on this one !!
I'm feeling rewire 3.5, sept 28 right now..

well.. He speaks from a knowing and anticipating point of view.. too many expectations. 99% of the crowd don't know the tracks and its mainly the word "CAN'T" in the opening that got me, as if its definitive. If he wants to hear almost full tracks along with all their precicous peaks and buildups... he should listen to them on his I pod. No one said you had to start a mix by cuing at the beginning of the track and letting it build up and no one said mixes must last long. He speaks as if theres rules to mixing and I think its bullshit. If you were to spend more time properly selecting tracks I'm sure you'd find ultra fast and ultra tight ways of putting them together. I'm sure theres a way to throw 70 tracks into a 1 hr mix and have it come out completely crazy good.. buildups and all. The only reason people wouldn't be able to "get into it properly" is because the dj sucks...and thats the real issue here. period.
I'm feeling hr, br, fr, sr right now..
