not quite sure why you posted a video of a dj trainwrecking because he tries to do too much and ends up sucking. |

cuz, he tried... his first couple of mixes go off a lil (till he brings em back) the last couple a pretty spot on (from memory) once at part 2 i dont remember hearing any trainwrecks
point is, i dont recall seing anyone djing in front of an audience and have three faders open on the mixer... if you think jeff mills sucks, feel free to, i hope you still get my point though

Jeff Milles probably does suck, Paul Oakenfold doens't even beatmatch and if you are mixing any form of trance having three faders open will probably make your nose bleed.
Dj Preach, now there's a good DJ...

a good DJ in my eyes is someone who can seemlessly transition two songs without losing any of the momentum built up... and bonus if you can overlay two songs to make one sick song.
but all styles have their value...

and all style doesnt mix the same, do that with gabber, or hardcore, your get people to sleep, you better do fast mix, with tricks, like cuts and everything, instead of crossfading ans slowl switching the bass, mid, high....
so your description only applies to psy-trance and trance dj's. pretty boring to see a dj sleeping on his mixer if you ask me ...
I'm feeling promiscuous right now.. |

DeadFunk : well, it depends really.. if you like to hear songs till the end or not really. I mean, yeah, in psytrance, the punchlines are usually near the end of the tracks, as things get more intense. It might not be the same for other styles that are more loopy like techno for instance. so yeah, i can agree that it might be borning, but then again, if you like a specific style of music, that's becasue you like to hear tracks out and realise that the track is good from start to end. if not, maybe we just don't like that specific song.
One thing for sure, i would never rate a Dj on how long his tracks play out, unless they are just plain borning tracks.. but then again, i'm sure the next 20 tracks will be just as boring anyways.. lol

Sure, some hardcore and gabber sounds good with quick cuts, but if the DJ really knows what he's doing, he'd be able to near seamlessly blend the 2 together. Sure, quick cuts back and forth and fast mixes can get a crowd riled up and going insane, but if you REALLY want to bring them to the next level, ride it out a little, have elements from both your tracks come back and forth, slowly bring in your second track.. It builds up a hell of a lot more anticipation if you draw out bringing in your next track and tease with it, and that's going to culminate in a much bigger impact on the dancefloor when the new track finally hits.

Exactly, and sometimes you can get some sick percussion loops from the song coming in the make the song going out peak again and then right at the end of the build up, BAM new bass line. You all love it!

scuse me but that sounds pathetic! if u have to rely on people taking drugs
to enjoy your set!of course it helps and we all love playing when people r fucked out there minds...ect but ya its all about boom...chakra and unfortunately lotsa new(last ten years) djs r pretty lame.a lot of dj s stick to a style so they only attract newbies & druggies!people that have been listening and dancing to techno 15 years want to be surprised and elevated by music that dont need drugs to uplift! but i m sure deadfunk is a kiss ass dj but you alienzed im not sure u gloat too much!peaceout though

Oh man you guys are on crack.. Jeff mills is an amazing DJ.. He just does things dirty.. Try and even pay attention to how much he is doing every second in that video.. I'd rather watch him mash-up 70 songs in an hour than watch a trance DJ do perfect transitions between 13 cheesy tracks... But I mean, if you are on loads of E then it's easier to handle 13 trance tracks played from start to finish than an elaborate techno set. Update » nothingnopenope wrote on Thu Sep 13, 2007 @ 11:46pm I'd like to see a psy-trance DJ mix 70 tracks in an hour, but it might be hard with all those 5 minute breakdowns

you don't have to play breakdows. |

a good dj is someone who makes the party go boom! I'm gonna convert a quote from the Scratch movie that was in reference to crate-digging for this situation: Blending tracks together won't make a bad DJ good, but it'll make a good DJ better.

just to clarify a few things said
blending tracks seamlessly does not mean slowy mixing them. That sounds like shit and is what bad djs do. You should mix in parts musically ie after 16 bar phrase , add the other track with some EQ tweaks. Then maybe each 8 bar phrase , change the eq so that eq band emphasis switches from each track. And when the bass of the new song has come in , people should know it has come in. People should realise a new song is playing. The fact that people know it is a new song will add momemtum. People are used to hearing " songs " and the longer you make a track appear to be in length , the more bored people will get. |
