Do any of you have any tips for mixing drum and bass using CDJ's? Does the .7% rule work?

what's the .7 rule?

The CDJs I've found easiest to mix DnB with so far are the 800s for the vinyl mode (I guess the 1000s also..), makes it easier to que up and drop the record 'cause you can "scratch" it rather than just have to time the play button and franticaly spin the nudge if you're just a little off.

no the .7 rule doesnt work.. thats related to bpm and only applies loosly to tracks around the 143-147 bpm range..

good to know.

fuck, I was at Club Bacchus playing a set and they have Technics CDJs. So not intuitive...
like there's no way to manualy set a queue point, you have to hit it head on and then the vinyl job is WAY too sensitive... almost impossible to slow a track down without nearly making it go into reverse.

yeah, they also sound like ass when you scratch/cue/backspin/etc.. I love the platter (since I'm way more used to turntables than CDJs) but the Pioneers are WAY better in terms of sound quality and actually sounding like a record.

I'd tried them a while back.. If you're used to mixing with vinyl, the interface is amazing, no learning curve at all.. But it sounds absolutely nothing like vinyl when you're bringing it back..

just today. DnB is awesome, and like. DJ Psytrance is great, but I believe a DJ should be able to spin any style...
DnB I can imagine is one of the complicated one due to it's high bpm and high variations in BPM from song to song.

It's not really all that high in variation unless you're going with really old stuff.. most DnB tends to be between 170 and 175, unless you start getting into the insane metal/indstrial/hardcore influenced stuff, which tends to range anywhere from 178 to 185 with the occasional 190..

DnB tends to be pretty easy to mix I find, just listen to the hats, or get the 2-step snares lined up, and you're pretty much good to go.

Mind you, I think dnb's ... more hectic? structure would perhaps make it harder to mix then trance.

Actually speaking of dnb I haven't really been fallowing up on any of it... it's hard enough keeping track of all the new psytrance that seems to come out every fucking day.

Anything new that sounds sort of like... hmmm... kemal?

well, recently there's been some really good stuff that's similar from Noisia and Phace.. The Calyx and Teebee album, Anatomy, is also absolutey amazing. You should check out the Phace - Psycho album along with the Calyx and Teebee.. And just about any noisia, though the more kemal-ish tune they've put out recently is probably the Facade VIP..

i dont kno why people think its harder to mix dnb then any opther style, its not the first time i hear this.

mixing dnb is exactly the same as mixing new style gabber in fact, the structures are usally the same, same thing, the only diference if that in dnb you dont have a 4/4 kick, wich, if the person is a real dj, shouldnt need a 4/4 kick to beatmatch, cue and mix a track.

thats why me and stunna love to do gabber and bass sets!

but for the cdj thing, i have mixing on cd's with the vinyl mode on, like you said, its practically impossible to slow the vinyl without making it go backward. so id stick with cd mode, its pretty easy to mix dnb this way, i allways do it

i forgot, if you really wanna use vinyl mode, you can mix with the pitch, i dont know if you know this technique, works best on tt's, but it works on cdjs too, well, best on pioneers

Yeh, I use final scratch to mix my music. To tell you the TRUTH, I prefer cdj-800's because theyre lock on perfectly once you have it queued in your 'phones, and ususally stays on track. Neurofunk is always a little bit harder to mix because you WANT all those little breakdowns and fills to clash perfectly, thats why cdj tends to give me that result as quick as possible, and thats why the likes of the biggest producers and Dj's in DNB use them (Noisia, Psidream, Dsl, The Upbeats etc..) so they can throw down like 45-50 tracks in under 2 hours! It just makes sense, the queuing and matching is a lot quicker imo and the sound quality is amazing.

Here grab my new mix =====> [ rave.ca ] or any other mix thats been recorded "Live" and check the structures and and the way theyre faded in and out so you can get an idea of whats going on. And listen to any other studio mix (Not live, but I suggest Freds mixes because theyre done in Ableton and they're PERFECT!) for the structures of the tunes and how theyre supposed to be brought in and strategized. Because it is all a strategy with dnb, if theres none, it comes out sounding off beat and terrible. Remember, its all about waiting for the 16th bar to hit, then start your next tune, then youll never have any problems what so ever, especially if you know your tracks well =p
