Asian stocks were mixed in Tuesday trading, as worries continue over the impact the downturn in the US mortgage market may have on the global economy.

After slight overnight falls on Wall Street, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index was down 0.03% in late trading, while Sydney's All Ordinaries had lost 0.66%.

However, Tokyo's Nikkei had recovered, adding 0.1% after the Bank of Japan moved to calm the markets.

The sub-prime crisis in the US has led to fears of a global credit crunch.

To ease such concerns, the European Central Bank, Bank of Japan and US Federal Reserve have since the end of last week pumped billions of emergency funds into the financial system.

'No need to panic'

As a sign that the worst fears may now be over, the Bank of Japan has now withdrawn all of its extra cash.

JP Morgan economist Masamichi Adachi said the central bank's move would be taken by markets "as a message that there is no need to panic, that the short-term money market in Japan is stable".

However, it did not prevent shares in banks such as Mitsubishi Financial Group from continuing to fall.

In Australia, mortgage lender Rams Home said the "unprecedented disruptions" in credit markets may reduce its profit.

excess liquidity (to much money in circulation)+problems in the credit market(subprimes)+unevenly distributed risk=a very volatile situation in the global economy.
