the problem I have is that everytime I run a "relatively" demanding application, the computer locks up for about 15 second periods at a variable interval (quantity of lock-up time and inteval time variation being based on how demanding the application is)... now I could think that its due to my computer being a peice of crap (see specs below) but thing is, when its not in "lock-up mode" whatever im running runs perfectly smooth... also when i say "demanding application" this acctually includes stepmania and snes emulators... these lock-ups wont occur if im just surfing the net and listening to music, or movies or downloading massive amouts of stuff... the only time I encounter this problem oustide of ableton and the aformentionned "demanding application" is while watching youtube videos...

this problem really came out of the blue... no hardware or major software changes done to provoque the bug... just one day its working fine and the next its complete fucking hell! and never was able to fix it since

here is a quick list of what I've tried:
-running the computer with the network card unplugged (no internet connection...)
-check disk on all hard drives
-changing sound drivers
-spyware removal
-virus scan
-formating hard drive and reinstalling windows (non-legit but different version)
-adding ram (going from 256 to 512)
-tune-up utility
-changing wireless network adapter
-punching tower (this was not to fix the problem but it did help out vent some frustration)

specs:
Its a compaq evo model D500

+ two 128 mb sdram bars (probably at 133 mhz also)
+ two ata hard drives added, both are western digital, one is at 80 gb and the other one at 250 gb
changed the video card to a radeon 9600 pro
added a wireless network adapter (netgear wg311)

running win XP sp2 up to date...

urgh... fucking help me!!! AAAAAH
I'm feeling better right now..

could be memory problems, find a memory testing app and try that.

Well that solves the problem... Buy a low end core 2 duo (if you don't have lots of money), it's worth it... You will be happy you did... You can get a 70$ motherboard, 1gig of ram (70$) and the chip (170$) for about 300$. Personally I think it's worth it to go the extra mile and spend a little more but for 300$ you can pimp your computer and even over clock it a LOT (depending on your motherboard).

Here's one: [ www.memtest.org ]

Some simple things to check:

- disk space (probably not it if you reformatted)
- CPU/power supply fans
- DMA on all drives; separate them on different cables wherever possible
- update video card drivers/try some alternate non-official ATI drivers (google it)
- raise RAM timings/disable speculative read in BIOS
- drop $200 on mb/cpu combo + RAM already, that thing's even older than my system

strike that last one, I guess

I just paid off 12,000$ of debt :) I know the feeling... I just know that at my work, there is an old P4 1.6 for some reason and I used it once and I thought I was going to have a panic attack from using it.

rawali you should check your audio/video codecs too... try do remove them all and install CCCP [ www.cccp-project.net ]

also be sure that if you're using several RAM slots they're all EXACTLY of the same type

and obviously, check your disk space... you should have at least 1.5 GB of free space on your windows partition

also, try to update your chip drivers, like for the motherboard chipset, the videocard, and the soundcard. check [ www.touslesdrivers.com ] if you want this to be quickly and easily done (and if you understand french of course ;)
I'm feeling phd powa !!! right now..

vlcplayer - [ www.videolan.org ]

never install codec packages...

BTW: Fun facts about 45-nm transistors...

- Hundreds could fit on the surface of a single red blood cell
- 2,000 fit across a human hair
- 30 million fit on the head of a pin
- It can switch on and off approximately 300 billion times a second. A beam of light travels less than a tenth of an inch during the time it takes a 45nm transistor to switch on and off.

Matroska pack and CCCP pack are the only ones worth... i've only needed one or two codecs that weren'tin those packs, and i've never had nor heard of any compatibility problems with those 2 packs

Ever though of downgrading you os to w2k or sumething, I mean less overhead. I have a 733 mgh dinosaur with 256m ram (worry not, secondary puter;) and it seems okay... xp is okay, but demands a lot more that 2k hardware wise...

My two cents
I'm feeling homocidal right now..

If your card's drivers aren't being used then the CPU has to handle more of the graphics.

hard drives are supposed to be 20% empty at all times to avoid fragmenting, which can cause your computer to search for files for a really long time. It does sound like a memory issue though... also, with how old the machine is I would suggest removing any unecessary components like built in modem. power issues are way more important that most people realize. And Windows 2000 is a good idea if you don't NEED XP. To find out what kind of motherboard you have, enter the serial number into a google search...

your computer does this because its from the fuckin' 90's... and you barely have the mininumum requirements for your operating system....

you can have a kick ass processor and a ddr motherboard and xp is still gunna run run like ass with 256megs of ram.
I'm feeling warm unicorn jizz right now..

Yeah, win XP will "run" with 256 ram, but that's while using up some hard drive already for the paging file.. The OS itself takes around 300 megs ram for itself to run smoothly.
