A campus of Concordia University in Montreal was locked down Tuesday morning over what turned out to be a false report about an armed man on campus. Around 9:30 ET this morning, a janitor at the Loyola Campus of Concordia, in the city's west end, became worried after seeing a man dressed in camouflage carrying a long, black case or bag. The employee called 911 to report an armed man on campus. About 50 police cars and the riot squad responded. The campus was locked down, with students escorted off while police refused to let anyone else in. University spokeswoman Chris Mota says there was an orderly and calm evacuation, with students arriving for classes being told to return home. Montreal police Sgt. Ian Lafreniere says police used surveillance camera footage to track down the suspicious character and watch him as he walked to his locker. They then broke open the locker and found a case. Inside, were martial arts sticks. Though the threat is over, all classes at the campus have been cancelled for rest of day. CTV's Jed Kahane, reporting from the scene, says universities in the city are understandably nervous. "If you are someone working in a school knowing what has happened in the past in this city, what do you do if you see something who looks, in your mind, suspicious? I would imagine that they have clear instructions to err on the side of caution," he says. Earlier this year, a gunman armed with a shotgun, a handgun and a rifle entered Dawson College and began shooting, killing one student and injuring 19 others. In 1992, an engineering professor smuggled a gun into Concordia University and killed four of his colleagues. And in 1989, a gunman killed 14 women at the city's Ecole polytechnique. |
