Meh, the shuffle sells for $79 and apple makes them themselves.. that's really not that great a gift.. Had they given every employee a new MacBook Pro i'd be impressed.

for once i agree with neoform...

those things cost apple like 5 bucks to make.

you can buy a 1 gig portable hardrive nowadays for 15$.

and a shuffle is pretty much that with i tunes installed and a headphone jack...

i'd be more impressed if they gave thier employees a raise in thier annual income.

like fuck after the tax write off those shuffle probably didn't cost apple one red cent.

Also if you work for Apple there is a good chance you already have an ipod.

It would be a good christmas gift if you worked at Zellers. Still big companies are stinge like that so I would have been happy. At Ubisoft the only free games you got were either at Christmas, the ones you worked on, or PC games they couldn't sell(w/o the cases) and it costs them a penny to make one stupid disc. I bet the standard Apple christmas gift is a t-shirt that says Apple.

Well you're all spoiled because I've never gotten any sort of 'gift' from any company I've ever worked at. And whoever said this won't cost Apple anything must be smoking something I'd love to try because they have some 5000+ employees around the globe. That's 5000 * 79$ that they aren't making off consumers.

Besides, I so want one. I just wish you could rate tracks on it.

Apple has 15,000 employees.
Apple also made $14,000,000,000 last year in revenue.

Even IF the iPod shuffle costs $20 to make (which is a generous estimate), that would only end up costing $300,000.

Just a reminder to those who think $300,000 is a lot of money for a massive corporation... think of it like this, 300K will pay for 4 to 6 employees for a year. That's it.

Yeah they could have sold them instead, but they can easily make more, plus they said they were only going to be giving them out once the public demand has been met, in order to make sure there are no lost sales.

My x-mas gifts from work cost a lot more. They aren't as cool though. I also never worked somewhere where I didn't get anything for christmas, whether it be a bonus or a gift. Large corporations will normally give their own merchandise as gifts, obviously because it saves them a lot of money, there's no generousity in that.

just buying a bottle of wine or box of chocolates for each employee would have cost them more.

The other estimate was that every employee would have it by the end of November... but again you're making it seem like you expected Apple to give their employees anything at all. I mean, the employees have decent salaries as it is and giving them each a top notch mp3 player is completely gratuitous.
Also, after doing some quick research, i've found that the flash memory in the shuffle alone costs Apple roughly 35$, I won't even mention R&D but the other components including earphones and packaging will make the unit cost at the absolute very least 40$. Which doubles your figure to 600,000$. Apple, although a very large corporation now, is in no way massive compared to other players in the field who, as far as I know, do not give every single employee their brand new product.
Now take that 600,000$ and factor in the shipping, overhead and R&D costs and the figure jumps to well over 1,000,000$ total for this 'gift'. [sarcasm]Of course, a million dollars is nothing to a massive corporation, they probably throw that much away on coffee beans every week![/sarcasm]
But either way, it doesn't matter how much it costs the company, I don't think investors are happy that Apple is giving their employees anything at all for free and so the less it cost Apple to do this, the better for the company. The important part if the gesture itself. No it's not their high end mp3 player, but the employees do no 'need' an mp3 player, they were giving one as a gift, and THAT is what I find cool. Can anyone here actually say they wouldn't be happy to get a new shuffle for free? I am damned healous myself. Could just be me though...

They have decent salaries? What makes you say that? Just the fact that Apple bothered to make a press report about this and use it as a publicity stunt makes me wonder how cheap they really are. It's almost a rule of thumb that companies this large under-value and under pay their actual employees. Working for large corporations is extremely over-rated. They do look excellent on C.V's though - even if you were a janitor. They probably get paid better than Microsoft employees though.
I would be really happy to get that as a gift for sure.. but to say that their generous in giving a gift at all is bullshit if you ask me. I would most definitely expect them to give their employees gifts, I wouldn't even wonder. X-mas gifts are hardly even signs of appreciation for that reason - because they're expected. We get 'summer' gifts over here and I consider that a sign of appreciation, even if it's always something with the company name plastered across it because it's taking it one step further. Instead of saying 'it's sufficient', it says 'we like'. If it's big news for them to give their employees an 80$ product for x-mas than what do they get on a normal x-mas? That's what I wanna know, it's prob not as bad as I think.

What I'm trying to say id you probably shouldn't be jealous. These people are probably getting a lot less than they deserve. Not that I would know.

I don't know how they treat their employees either, but do you know anyone who's ever gotten something as cool (yeah I find them real cool) as an iPod shuffle... just like that, in November...
although it prolly is an xMas thing, it's a month early and it's a product that was JUST released, so this is no 'let's get rid of our old shit' scheme.
Also, you brought up a good point, but the fact is there was 'no' press release, I found that info on a rumor site. So apple isn't even using this to make themselves look good, there's not even announcing it. Although they might later on.
Again though, this is NOT a great thing for shareholders so it's really not press release worthy.

Okay I agree that no, I never heard of anyone getting a gift so cool. I'm just not gonna applaud them for it is all. Don't ever fool yourself into believing that there are nice or generous corporations. I respect everything that Apple is done.. like, oh hell, inventing the PC but a corporation is a corporation. The 'rumour' site is AppleInsider and the AppleInsider staff wrote that article.

That is absolutely false, apple does NOT spend $35 per shuffle on the flash cards. The iPod shuffle is their most profitable ipod due to it's extremely low production cost. Apple has made several huge deals with Samsung worth billions for flash chips for it's ipods. Apple gets that shit very cheap. If i can buy a 1gb usb memory key at futureshop for $40 retail you can bet your ass apple isn't paying $35USD for a 1GB chip. They would have to be insane to be paying even half that. The chips in the ipod shuffle are probably sold to apple for $5 a peice.

The article is a bit older than I thought
[ www.pcworld.com ]
but I wasn't talking out of my ass, or rather typing out of my.... anyway!
The article even mentions the future and that prices for 512mb MIGHT go down to 31$, that's half the memory they are buying now.
Point is that Apple is NOT making more than a 50% margin off this thing, meaning it likely costs them over 40$ CAN per unit.
If they could, they would lower the price to sell more and kill the market, (they are greedy but not idiots).
Second of all, that 40$ 1gb memory key is likely on sale and being sold with a loss or a near 1% margin.
Thirdly, until you show me some sources, you're just assuming these things. Flash memory is still fairly expensive, There's no way 1gb is costing them 5$, NO WAY. Prove me wrong and I'll admit it, but until then, you're wildly exagerating while I do research and am not exagerating at all.
Here's another article stating 30$ as the price of the materials
[ lakh.wordpress.com ]
NOW factor in marketing, salaries, shipping(to and from), packaging, R&D, ear phones, the dock, the decoder, the plastic and the other components, all which factor into the cost.
So check your sources before you claim I am absolutely false.

You realize that retail stores mark up the cost of a product by about 60% on most merchandise? tech is lower, normally about 30% to 40%, the manufacturer (apple) sells to the retailer they make their cut, which can be a lot or a little, with the shuffle it's about 50% cause it's super cheap and easy to make. When apple sells an ipod shuffle directly, they make that 50% PLUS the 30% to 40% that the retailer makes.. which means the shuffle costs apple about $15 to $20 a peice..

I hate to say it but I'm a real Apple freak and I happen to know that apple resellers make barely anything. You can order 10000 iPods and you'll get 5$(each) off the retail price from their store. A lot of apple only stores went out of business because of it. At least it used to be that way, but considering they are selling a lot more now it might have changed. Now we're really just splitting hairs though, the real fixed cost is likely between 15$-35$, and neither of us will ever really know for sure.
I still want one :\
