Ophidian - A man and his music
Ophidian, the man who is responsible for a complete revolution in the hardcore scene as we know it today.
This interview shines a bit of light on the mans thoughts and views of the future.

How would you describe "Ophidian" ?
Ophidian for me is a state of mind I can be in while I’am working on tracks. He’s a guy who likes to experiment with new sounds and forms of synthesis, and like to import different methods used in other types of (art) music into hardcore and tekno.

Your style can be described as dark, original and very rhythmic. In the past your music was completely different. Why this change and what inspired you?
In the beginning I produced mainly Artcore (old style hardcore) using the alias Trypticon, but at the end of 1999 Artcore had died out for most of the fans, and there was not much left to do in that style. I felt that the best tracks had already been made. When Gangsta closed down, I had to find a different way to work. By then I had released the Sin 15 (Supreme Intelligence) on which I had started to develop a new style. I decided to make this my new main project, and to see how far I could get with it. Enzyme was pleased when I produced some songs in my new style, even though they thought it was a bit weird at first. The tracks from this period resulted in the Enzyme X 2 and the Enzyme 3, Ophidian – Rhythmic Philosophy. For me, the start of the Enzyme X sub-label came as a blessing, because I could work with very few restrictions, and just experiment with different sounds and styles. Later I also added the techno-feel to my style, resulting in the style you can hear on my album.

You must have producers you look up to. Who are they and what do you like about them?
My main inspiration when starting off in the hardcore scene was Patrick van Kerckhoven. At first I didn't even know that most of the tracks I was listening were made by him. The Ruffneck label was my favorite. Later when I joined Gangsta, PvK helped me out a lot when I was learning how to work in a studio. I now listen a lot of Aphex Twin, and he continues to amaze me with his ultra complexity, or simplicity. To me he is an endless source of inspiration. More in general though, I respect every producer or artist who has made a statement doing what he does best, working on his own style.

You just released the very successful Blackbox. This product was sold out in no time and the reactions were very positive. How do you feel about this and what is your next goal?
I was very happy about the Blackbox doing so well, because I felt quite uncertain about it beforehand. The tracks were very experimental and I didn’t know if people would like my style. My next goal would be to pursue my experiments further, and try to take challenge my audience to listen to other stuff than they would normally. I would like to make a second album in the coming year, but it’s all just ideas at the moment.

Would you like to make other types of music & if yes, what styles would you like to make?
I already make many styles of music other than hardcore. For me music is a challenge, and so is exploring my own potential. I want to know what I can do, and how good I can get at it. At the moment I’m doing a lot of industrial stuff, but also techno, drill ‘n bass, and even writing piano songs. I don’t know if I will ever release anything of it, but the future will tell…

We heard you are a nightwalker. You make your tracks mostly during the night. Why is that?
I don’t know what really makes me a night person, but for some reason I always work better at night. I feel calm and free, and generally have more ideas and inspiration. Somehow the thought of everybody sleeping and the feeling of being left alone gives me a clear mind and a good mood. I think my music often also sounds like ‘night’ music and that exactly how I want it to be. I have a few friends who feel the same and often we work on music together or go walking for miles during the night, just to talk and think.

What are you doing right now? Do you have some new tracks which are ready to be released? Can you tell something about these tracks?
This is a very special moment to ask this, because for the first time in years I have nothing (!) planned for release. Someone has made a remix of one of my tracks, and it will be released soon, but I myself have nothing coming up. However! I do have many new tracks in many different styles, and soon I will have a good talk with Enzyme and see what we can come up with. So even though nothing is planned, don’t you worry, I don’t think it’ll be too long before I put out another piece of vinyl…

Is there something else you would like to say?
Thanks a lot for the support, and for being prepared to listen. Sometimes I receive e-mails from fans in which I can read that they have really listened to my music very well, and I get the feeling they are really starting to understand what’s in it. These are the people for who I make my tracks. They are dedicated to you.

Ça approche à grand pas !! La prévente est excellente, on va avoir à un party encore plus endiablé que l'an dernier. En plus, je pense bien qu'on va battre un records de gens qui descendent de Montréal pour venir s'éclater à Québec pour l'Halloween...
