CBGB Landlord Serves Eviction Notice to Landmark Club
Sunday, September 11 2005 Widely regarded as the Mecca of Punk, CBGB has received an official notice of eviction from its landlord. The Bowery Resident's Committee has finally delivered the death toll for the legendary punk rock venue, CBGB. However, the club's owner still hasn't finished the good fight. The eviction notice was served to 76 year old club owner Hilly Kristal last Wednesday. In a statement, Kristal requested the BRC to "negotiate in good faith a new lease that is fair to all parties." Kristal has also stated that he will not obey the eviction notice and has called upon New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg to assist with mediation. Mayor Bloomberg has spoken out in favor of the club and offered assistance in this regard. The club has called 315 Bowery home for 30 years and has helped launch the careers of countless artists including The Ramones and The Talking Heads. CBGB has hosted performances from such artists as AC/DC, Blondie, Elvis Costello, The Police, Guns and Roses, Rollins Band and Social Distortion. The monthly rent is $19,000. [ www.cbgb.com ] |
