Killa Jewel * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Killa-Jewel has always had a love of music. At seventeen, she gained an interest in electronic music, and has been DJing since December 1997. She began by spinning House, Techno, Drum and Bass, and Break-Beats for private house parties. One year later, she was introduced to Hip-Hop music and became acquainted with scratching.

Killa-Jewel has performed with other big-name artists, including Kardinal Offishall, The Swollen Members, Mr. Lif, Virtuoso, Blurum 13, and Manchilde. During the summer of 2000, Killa-Jewel performed with Dubmatique on three separate occasions. She participated in Legendary One, and Under Pressure 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003. She was the resident DJ at Bluedog, Blizzarts, Angels, and guest-appeared at Quartier Latin Pub, Istory Pub, Saphire Club, Jingxi Club, Club Aria, Alena Montreal, Luba Lounge, Babylon and Surface in Ottawa, C’est What in Toronto, headlined at Club Sona, and opened for Grand Master Flash at Cream's outdoor festival. She performed for Canada Day at Montreal’s Old Port as well. Killa-Jewel has also been a regular participant in the open-turntable night Tableturns ever since it came to Montreal in December 1998, and showcased at the opening of Tableturns in Toronto in April 2001, and in Ottawa in August.

Year 2001 was an explosive one for Killa-Jewel. In March, she entered her first Gemini battle where she was awarded 2nd place. Then in April, Killa-Jewel represented Gemini at the annual trade show Salon Pepsi Jeunesse. She also performed with Rock bands Okoume and The Respectables for a crowd of 50,000 in Quebec City for its annual Fete D’ete. In July, Killa-Jewel competed in the International Turntablist Federation’s (ITF) Categories scratching competition in New York City, where only six people out of the Western Hemisphere were chosen to battle! It was a personal best. Shortly thereafter, she performed with Quebec singer and songwriter Marie-Jo Therio at the Spectrum for Montreal's annual Francapholie festival. In October, she performed at Thriller in Ottawa. Killa-Jewel also collaborated with pop band Play (along with vocalist and guitarist Antoine Sicotte of Sky).

During the summer of 2002, with the sole use of her turntables and CD player, Killa-Jewel composed and performed the entire soundtrack to the theatrical production 2000 Questions at Place-Des-Arts. She was also recently involved in Robert Lepage’s production of Zulu Time (which was part of the Montreal Jazz Festival), co-produced by Peter Gabriel, and had performed a scene from the production later in the year at the Governor General Awards Ceremony (a televised Canadian awards show) in Ottawa. As of late, Killa-Jewel recorded with Nam: Live on their latest album, and produced the introduction track to the Under Pressure Magazine hip-hop CD compilation Up North Trip Vol. 2 (released in conjunction with the magazine), world-wide. In September 2002, she opened for Non-Phixion and The Beatnuts with Patrick Bateman in Ottawa. She also appeared in DL Incognito’s video, “Rugged Raw”.

Killa-Jewel recently placed 2nd at Dawson’s Street Heat DJ battle. She came 3rd at the Ottawa regional DMC, brought heat to the Montreal eliminations on June 6th, and also recently placed 2nd in DMC Teams in Toronto on July 11th. In August she performed at Honey Jam, an all Canadian female showcase in Toronto. She was featured on Teen TVO early this fall as one of a selected few to represent Honey Jam. She is also highlighted in an interview with [ www.hiphopcanada.com ] for the month of September. Killa-Jewel is currently featured on Q-Bert’s newly released Scratching Volume 2 DVD, also being released world-wide.

In the next few months, Killa-Jewel looks forward to working on many more upcoming personal projects including a mix CD sponsored by Triple Five Soul (featuring Eternia, DJ Serious and DJ Simahlak). She is presently rehearsing for The Begger’s Opera, also directed by Lepage, in which she plays the piano, the drums, acts, dances and sings, as well as scratches. It will open in Montreal and tour Europe this spring. Killa-Jewel continues her studies in Communications at Concordia University, helping her pursue her goal of becoming a music producer and a successful, world-renowned DJ.

Dj Rue * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

DJ Rue loves drum and bass enough to be willing to destroy it.
Born Camille, she was given a pair of hand-me-down turntables at 14. With a disregard to the politics surrounding DJ-ing, Rue began to mix samples from pop music and everyday life into the fragmented noises that her heroes were producing. Raised in the 4-4 heavy city of Chicago, Rue took the soul of house and combined it with the funky and urban sounds of DNB, switching from ear-bleeding hard-step to techno-phile electro-step without missing a beat. Rue gives her audience a constant feeling of “Oh-no she di’int” and Ooh lord, yes she did!” Now almost 20, her mixing skills have been honed, her tech 12s are brandished, and her love of experimentation is entirely changing the every day kicks and snares we are used to. Now living in Montreal, she is willing to take on conventional drum and bass and is taking no prisoners. Rue is an individual determined to take drum and bass to the next level – a place where all sounds come together harmoniously and flee chaotically.

special ps. exsclusive info- for this event she's leaping beyond the edges of DNB and will be apparently playing some ghetto tech and electro.....what!
but I am sure there will be some DNB played. have no fear.

Dirty Dan * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

stolen from her [ rave.ca ] profile without consent, Dirty Dan says:

"i like beats
4/4
6/8
5/4's are always kewl............................
but i've also got this addiction to 'black crack' and the scratch of a needle....and i like to twist knobs.
so
what i really really like
is when the beats are all broken up.
busted the fuck out in a mashed up amen heaven of madness
with a thick bassline to make your bones vibrate

or a hard dirty tekno beat, with a funky groove to the rhytmn.

or a little of this, with a little of that.
with some raunchy lyrics about hoes shaking their asses"

Cyan * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

DJ, radio host and producer Cyan aka Corina MacDonald has been an active participant in Montreal’s electronic music scene since her arrival in the city in 1996. From that time she has been involved in community radio, hosting electronic music shows on CKUT 90.3 fm. Currently she hosts modular_systems, an electronic music magazine show focusing on local artists, djs and events. Cyan has been active in organizing events with the [ phoniq.net ] Robo/tek and Women on Wax crews.

Cyan is known for her techno and house sets – she has a broad knowledge of music and is equally happy playing hard tech, minimal tec/house, Chicago house or old Detroit electro. Her dj sets are layered, deep rhythmic explorations into the intersections of techno, house and electro. They can be heady and abstract, hard and slamming, or funky and soulful. She djs regularly at events around Montreal, and has played at festivals and events in Toronto and in France.

modular systems is broadcast on tuesdays from 1500-1700 est on CKUT 90.3 fm or online at [ www.ckut.ca ]

dj jasmine * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

dj jasmine has trouble writing bios. What's more, she often finds it troublesome to describe exactly what she plays as a dj, or her style- due to her ridiculously varied musical tastes and collection. Her style is definitely on the old school, funky tip- and her love affair with heavy bass is hard to miss.

But what does she actually play?? Lately jasmine's sets are an ambitious mix of breaks, and various styles of breakbeat, hip-hop, ragga/dancehall, jump-up and ragga jungle. She is also recently incorporating new UK grime/eski/ sublow, dubstep, as well as some garage and 2-step into her sets.
Because she secretly wishes the world was one big booty party, jasmine also plays hip-house/dance party rap, ghetto tech, booty house, as well as some acid and funky/ disco-influenced early 90's house.

jasmine's life as a dj began in 2001 at Trent Radio, the Trent University college radio station in Peterborough, Ontario. She quickly became a part of the community radio team for years to come- holding down various weekly music shows. Her favorites were her dub and roots reggae show, as well as Mixed and Twisted, which was an experiment in mixing as many things at once as humanly possible.
In 2003 jasmine soon began playing at parties and bars around Peterborough, but didn't really consider herself a real dj until she moved to Montreal in July of 2004.

Here in Montreal jasmine began playing huge circus cabarets and loft parties, as well as collaborations with her many circus performer friends. She often makes personalized musical mixes for artists. She hasalso been featured on CKUT's Modular Systems, as well as CJLO.

So far she's played in several loft parties and venues around town, such as Station C, Missy bar (where she started out here, with Dj Rue and Cyan), Reggie's pub (Concordia), Buddha Bar tuesdays, Blizzart's Monday Rock night, Saphir's Mix Thursdays, and the Legendary Blue Dog, at Women on Wax, as well as Ez-Bake Mondays.
