ok this post is going to be VERY opinionated but it is just my perspective, i know many will disagree...

first of all, I dont disagree that drug use at raves is sometimes a problem. but drugs are probably the reason why there is even a rave scene in the first place. if you look back to the late 80's, the spreading popularity of raves coincided with the spreading popularity of ecstacy. as far as I've read, almost everyone took ecstacy in those early raves. now of course alot of ravers have moved on to far nastier drugs, which of course hasn't helped. but lets be honest...its not possible for most people to stay up all night dancing sober. so without drugs, what kind of scene would we have left? sad but true. and this is coming from a nearly complete straightedge.

next..the issue of legality. personally, i'm not even sure myself if i would be glad if raves became legalalized. i mean in Montreal we have such a large legal nightlife...clubs, afterhours, and the big production companies like 514 and ray junior. but somehow raves are different than all that. i think at least part of the reason why is their quasi-legal status. if raves were to become legal, it would mean increased security, drug policies, etc, which would limit the ability of promoters to throw smaller, more intimate parties. instead, it would encourage commercialism and profit-driven promoters...basically making raves less of what we enjoy about raves.

hence: the reason i became a promoter...

sad but true... but if they did become legal, i doubt they would lose popularity... the druggies wouldnt go because they wouldnt get in...

i totally agree with Poisoned Candy's (i believe your name is Dan) first paragraph. You seem to tolerate the use, but not the abuse of drugs at raves, i feel the same way.

As for the second paragraph, you mention legality and raves becoming legalised. Personally, i don't care if they become legalised or not, all i wish for is to be able to find venues for parties easier. If cops bust a party, there is absolutely nothing that can be done on the spot.

paul, speed yes, i can see why people would take it at a rave.

but that's not all that's going on.. can you tell me how K is supposed to help you out? Ketamine is a tranquilizer.. that's a downer.. explain to me how K is supposed to make the music better or make you dance longer.. oh of course that's not why people take it.. right? well K just happens to be a drug that people like taking, rave or no rave, and i don't see how it makes a rave any better..

don't tell me that i wouldn't know cause i've never taken it, cause all drugs make your brain go ga ga, you can do em any time, and doing em at a rave doesn't make the rave better.. if you wanna do drugs like that, why not do em somewhere other then a rave, that way those who really wanna go for the music and dancing can do so without giving the police a reason to bust the parties...

"the druggies wouldnt go because they wouldnt get in..."

ummm ever been to a ray junior party? they even have a cop car parked out in front but that doesnt stop people smuggling drugs in. or what about hulla - ive never been but from reading meg's review it seems there were plenty of drugs. or even stereo - think noone takes drugs there?

it isn't a matter of stopping people from bringing drugs in, it's a matter of convincing em that they can have a great time without the drugs..

neoform - i believe you. but lets be honest, raves would be nowhere near as popular as they are now if it werent for drugs.

people's drugs get confiscated at the door...
they sell it back to them inside... you dont think the promoter is in on that? they know that people go to raves for the drugs... they know the potential money they can make by selling on the inside

....... um.. isn't the main complain among the underground community is that raves are commercialized? less poppularity = more underground scene....

what's the downside?

damn...somehow the thread went from cops and raves to the assumption of drugs and raves......

not that im complaining but i think that ppl shouldnt go for the sole purpose of taking drugs...dont just go to a rave cause it gives u an excuse to pop some pills or wtvr and get all fucked..
go if u like the music and ejoy dancing. go if u like the environment and atmosphere and feeling that u get from it..
yieah the drugs r a big part of the scene, without them there wouldnt be that much of a scene.... i agree with if u go to a rave and take something to stay awake. because yes it is hard to stay awake all ngiht and keep on the dance floor but that doesnt give a reason to end up puking ur guts out in a bathroom.
and in my opinion i think id like to keep the raves somewhat illegal cause like dan said once they become legal theyll beocme commercialized. which isnt exactly enjoyable because guys/girls will come in looking just to get laid. and i think a prt of why a lot of ppl go to raves os to get away from that.......
anywho i dont wanan bore to many ppl so ill just end like that

much love =)

and.. legalization wouldnt decrease the number of illegal raves... people would just organize their own without the cops' presence

bitch bitch bitch

no action taken

I again remind you people of how toronto solved it's problems. They got up and did something. They organized events, propaganda, teachings, spoke directly to the government, they got things changed by hard work because, even though the scene sucks in toronto, they stood by it. People worked together for the greater good of a COMMUNITY. But you ask someone here about community and they will get offended and ask you about individualism and how they deserve to do what they want and face their own consequences, without any thought of how it harms the community.

The rave scene is dieing, and it's not because of the police or government's will to destroy raves. It's rotting away from the inside out folks and untill people stop being so selfish and stop caring so much about themselves and start standing up for the community they "care so much about", untill then, the rave scene will continue to fall apart, the rave scene will die, and eventually perish.

raves, as far as i understand, are in sort of a grey area legally. introducing rave legislation would define what is a legal rave, which would in turn be accompanied by a crackdown against illegal raves (no purpose in introducing a law without enforcement). this would in effect polarize the scene..you would have large, mainstream, legal raves, in addition to small, very underground raves. personally, i prefer what we have now. and yes i wish we could convince more people that they can have a great time without drugs...easier said than done.
