I'm definitely not talking about the laisez-faire attitude in QC. I believe the rest of North America could learn from Quebec in that department. I moved here from Toronto because I didn't agree with the 9-5 "Hi, What do YOU do" attitude I experienced there. Toronto was greedy about things, but it would never have emerged as the bigge$t city unless Montreal dropped the ball 1st.
I'm talking about the way the government spends, and operates, and the way it dropped the ball and let Toronto boom. And maybe it's a good thing. Toronto has a crazy crime rate, where MTL is pretty safe. Quebec has a distict flavour and culture. I, as an Ontarian, view Ontario's culture as the complete lack of a culture (except maybe Diet USA, or America Lite). Toronto may get the job done, but Montreal has a better rep internationally. This is the first year I experienced the nature of QC politics via the Ministry of Ed (now the Ministry of Education, Sport, and Leisure...I don't see the connection either). It is nuts even by institutional standards. You're right, Dr. Mailloux does not belong in that list any more than a radio shock-DJ belongs. I don't know why I included him. But, yes, he is a dink. I can also find you 2 dozen equal dinks in Ontario, or any other anglo territory. And I was paraphrasing M. Parizeau. But if there is one fellow who should have known better than to go there, it's Parizeau. That guy is SMART. He was a Rhodes Scholar, which is a big fucking deal. A person in his position as the Premier of a province should have excercised a little diplomacy in such a pivotal and historical speech. His words will grow more twisted with the passing of time and he squandered what was an impressive accomplishment of leadership. And Dreamer dropped some knowledge about WHY he would say such a thing (Thanks!). For the record (it's a hot topic), I really want to understand what the deal is. I've thought a lot about QC sovereignty. Sometimes I believe the US would buy Canada for scrap. Othertimes I think, Hey, if Lichtenstein can do it... Education helps. Racism does grow out ignorance and fear. The province does have the highest drop out rate in Canada and the public school system is the poorest, but the people who are causing the most headaches are among the most educated (i.e. Parizeau, Dr. Mailloux, Government Administrators, etc...). So what a gwan? I understand that Montreal is not reflective of the rest of Quebec. Where is this going? |

no we arent! stupid generalisation (N.B. i dont call you an idiot, i say that what you just said was idiot)!!! they took his name cuz his books were influent for a lot of people, hes kinda part of quebec history, i dont know. A lot of people (Crémazie is part of them also) used to have an incredibly conservatist way of thinking before 1960 in Quebec. He was like that (he was a priest). The stupid things he said doesnt change the fact that he has been kinda important...as well as any patriot that has a big street name or i dont know...francophones could be frustrated that theres a street named for John F. Kennedy in Mtl, or that Westmount people refused to change blvd Dorchester for René-Lévesque, but thats only street names and lionel groulx is only a writter and a stupid metro station name! |

well hitler was important but i doubt they'll name a subway station after him in germany. and besides they'll go out of their way to change "ile st. helene" to "parc jean drapeau" but they leave the anti semetic prick his spot. |

oh god.. get over it
from a frenchman's perspective, minus the anti-semitism, he was great look at a french histroy book and look him up.. there wont be anything about how he hated jews itll focus on all the stuff he did that was good for the frenchies the same would have happened with hitler had he won the war... hed be all dolled up in history books |

ok were talking about little priest that wrote an **extrême droite** book vs a dictator that killed a million of jews... not exactly the same thing lol. Theres also a Maurice Duplessis blvd in Rivière-des-prairies, wich is even worst than a lionel groulx metro station lol. |

its the prime minister who sold all the natural ressources of quebec to american cies. Because of that, no french people could access administrative jobs cuz the owner of the cies were all anglophones and diriged their cies in english only. English people were the leaders of economy in quebec (by association, the leaders of the province) and the natives were the cheap labor. Duplessis idea was that french people should care about religion before all, and as catholic religion do not care about money... anyway... duplessis brought at least one good thing... his death brought Révolution Tranquille. |

Onlyin Quebec can the government spend millions to get a 5 year study going on where to build a superhospital, after thousands of spending tax payers money to figure that shit out, will get it done within a few years all the while that money should be divided into most hospitals in the immediate because of all the hundreds of patients in corridors resulting from overcrowding. Only here are we dumb enough to get a flashy hospital to impress the medical community while countless patients have to wait days in another one just to get a fucking X-Ray done.
And anyone who tells me how Quebec can hold its own budgetwise will have me point out the sponsorship scandal. Quebec is like one big fucking Enron. Which is why, as a french-canadian, I've moved to better things than vote PQ, thank you. Hell, for the past 10 years, instead of voting for someone, I void my vote. Better this than vote for an idiot that'll end up emptying my pockets. This way I can say " don't look at me, I didn't vote for this douchebag. " |

not voting so you can't be held responsible for the guy in power is a copout. if you want less corruption, vote for someone else. |
Good [+1]Toggle ReplyLink» Atrix replied on Thu Jul 7, 2005 @ 9:37am |
Fuck voting. Run for election. The risk of NOT running for election yourself is that you'll be represented by someone less capable than you. |
