Ottawa urged to crack down on crystal meth
[ CTV.ca ] News Staff

Crystal meth is a powerfully addictive drug that has swept across the western United States. And now the problem has spread to Canada's western provinces as well.

Dave, a young man living in Regina, first tried crystal meth when he was 17. "It felt like the best feeling I've felt in my entire life," he told CTV's Jill Macyshon

He has since overcome his addiction, but is astonished at the speed with which the drug has become popular. "When I went in, no one had heard of crystal meth. When I came out it was everywhere, everywhere."

The problem has become such a concern that western justice and health ministers met with law enforcement officials in Regina on Friday, for a Crystal Meth Summit.

"I believe coming together today we can make some real progress," said Saskatchewan Premier Lorne Calvert.

Many policy makers want the drug re-classified, moving it into the same category as cocaine and heroin.

Crystal meth is currently classified as a category 3 drug, while cannabis is category 2 and heroin is category 1. The maximum penalty for a category 1 offence is life imprisonment.

An increased classification could also mean more treatment programs for addicts by raising awareness of the drug. There are currently only a few programs that users can enter.

"We had three guys last year who died on the waiting list trying to get into recovery," said Steve Paulson, who works for Teen Challenge, an organization that helps youth with drug addiction problems.

"So I would say, yeah, we're at a place where we do need some more help."

One reason for crystal meth's popularity is how easy it is to make. The chemicals can be found in any drug store, and the main ingredient is in cold medicine.

The government has proposed stricter controls for such chemicals, adding six specific chemicals that would require a license to produce and distribute
