I'm sure everyone here is aware that there are many many great international films out there. Although, you must consider that we live in (North) America and that these Hollywood or even NA Indy films are what is most accesible to us.

I love to watch films from France, Japan (especially) and Korea Too. Although, how often is it that we get a chance to ever see these films in our video stores or big screens?

Speaking of a French film: Rent LA HAINE.

@Mico... True. I agree yeah, it is way more EASY to watch north american movies. I guess people are lazy and watch what they have under their eyes only, and don't dig deeper. And this is exactly what they want to!!! This is why the DVD region codes exist. CONTROL. But if you dig a little bit (it needs some efforts I know! ;) ) you can find fantastic stuff, like you said, Korea & Japan, the next major movie makers in the next years, check this out.

most people aren't interested in watching indie movies cause, he they cost lots of money to see em, and most of the time, indie movies suck and aren't entertaining.

north american movies (in general) are entertaining.

(take this from someone who watches 3-5 movies a week in theaters, including a lot of indie films)

Indie movies are most of the time very very cheesy, cheaply made with poor actors and not very good. Asian movies though, ARE "entertaining" if I can say (god, I hate that word for an art...)

TITS! .. nice list- "the Fantastic Planet" is a great trippy french animation from '73, accompanied by very cool dark vibed funk. it's good stuff.
and Sebastian, i couldn't agree more. i think people mostly watch american movies cause those are the only movies they see previews for. you have to go out of your way to find the good stuff..

Japan is by far the leader in regards to the Horror Genre.
Ichi the Killer, Ringu, Ju-On 1&2 (aka the Grudge), even a Tale of Two Sisters. And there is SO MUCH MORE (why do you think Hollywood imports them?). I suppose it's a shame that Hollwywood Americanizes these films, giving the impression as if there isn't a market out there for foreign films. Anyone who overlooks the cinematic skills outside the US are fools...

But at the same time, who can blame them. I never heard of Ichi the Killer until my friend showed me a tiny little place in China Town selling contraband imported films. I mean you can't call me lazy over that! If I knew they existed, I sure as hell would have pounced on it immediatly. I suppose it's like you say... THEY (whoever THEY are) contorol the market to a certain degree, preventing people from becoming aware of some of these films. Not everyone wants to be ignorant, but sometimes it can't be helped.

[ karagarga.com ] is a great place for odd, independant, rare and foreign cinema.. basicly, anything not considered mainstream. Just last week i found 8 amazing oldschool funk compilations, a twisted japanese cartoon called "cat soup" - kinda like a dark version of hellokitty on acid and other things of interest.
they had open registration for awile, might still be open, i'm not sure.

Oh.. and regarding ichi the killer.... i rented it at the videostore and started watching it with a friend, only to realize that they cut out ALL THE SEMEN.. and Close up NIPPLE SLICING.. and a whole lot of other stuff was missing. point being.. Make Sure You Are Watching The UNCUT version!!
