He began as a mobile DJ, mixing CDs at school dances and house parties. His first experience with the turntables came in 1995, when his older brother brought home a Technics SL-1200. Annam realized that this tool had a lot of potential. He started to practice mixing house and techno music on other peopleís turntables until, in 1997, he bought his own tables. Scratching became more and more of interest to Annam, yet he lacked guidance. It was in the spring of 1998 that DJ Sevin introduced Annam to the world of turntablism. Sevin brought a stack of turntablist videos to Annam's house, where Annam stayed up all night watching in awe. Sevin showed Annam the basics of scratching, which gave birth to a DJ Mana. In late 1998, hip-hop quickly became the main focus in Mana's life. He began playing underground hip-hop shows with partner and apprentice, Killa-Jewel. Among these shows include Under Pressure, [ KoolOut.com ] Mr. Lif, Swollen Members, and an underground Hip-Hop residency at Blue Dog. From this experience, Mana was ready to take the next step- battling. Mana's first battle was the 1999 ITF Montreal Elimination. He came in the battle ill-prepared with only 2 sets. DJ Matrix easily beat him in the first round. Viewing his defeat as a learning experience, Mana was not discouraged. He continued to seek guidance in his music path. P-Love became Mana's mentor for a year until P moved back to New York. Mana began roaming Montreal to learn from a variety of turntablists, including Spazmodik, Scream, Progress, D. R. One, and Matrix. Mana moved to Hawaii for 3 months in 2000. There, he was inducted into the Nocturnal Sound Krew and Imon Factor. He took no vacation from his DJing. He practiced an average of 5 hours a day with his crew. With his newly honed skills, Mana entered the Blaisdell carshow battle that summer and tore it up to 2nd Place, trailing crew member, DJ Jami. In late 2000, Mana came back to Montreal, and won that year's ITF Montreal Elimination, beating D. R. One in a very close tie-breaker. Although Mana kept battling thereafter, it became of less importance to him. His primary concern became that of self-discovery. The turntables became Mana's tool for unraveling the truth about the human psyche. His first attempt starts with exposing his own psyche and comes in the form of a music album, Metamers, to be released in the late summer of 2002. |
