John Paul the First actually named himself "the First"... usually history names popes "the First" and whatnot because there's another pope with the same name after him... it's a pretty big assumption to name YOURSELF "the First" |

his name was Ioannes Paulus Primo Ioannes (John) because of Pope John XXIII, two popes before him and Paulus (Paul) because of Pope Paul VI, the pope just before him He took both their names because he agreed with both of their approaches to the papal position.. even though they differed greatly |
