JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel has approved 600 new housing units in a major West Bank settlement despite an understanding with Washington not to expand Jewish enclaves on occupied territory, political sources said Monday.
They said clearance for the housing at Maale Adumim, a few km (miles) east of Jerusalem, was given two months ago by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz. The sources said the plan could breach an understanding with the United States, Israel' main ally and chief mediator in its conflict with Palestinians, not to build more homes beyond the existing construction line in West Bank settlements. But President Bush told Sharon at a meeting in April that Israel could expect to be able to retain some West Bank land under any future peace deal with Palestinians if it carries out a unilateral plan to withdraw from Gaza next year. Maale Adumim, with almost 30,000 people, is one of several large West Bank settlements Sharon wants to consolidate as part of his "Disengagement Plan" that entails evacuating the much smaller Jewish settler population in Gaza. Palestinians, who launched an uprising in 2000, welcome the Gaza withdrawal plan but see it as a ruse to cement Israel's grip in the West Bank and deny them a viable state as envisaged by a U.S.-backed "road map" peace plan. The great majority of the 240,000 Jews living on land Israel captured in the 1967 Middle East war live in a few large West Bank settlement blocs. Around 8,000 settlers live in Gaza. |
