Considering that I'm one of the only people on this whole PLANET who liked Texas Chainsaw Massacre 4: The Next Generation, and Children of the Living Dead, I see absolutely NO way you could consider me a sequel/remake hater. :b

The american sequel of the ring is being directed by the guy who did the "actual" sequel to Ringu (Ring2 as opposed to the director of Rasen), and is going to also contain elements of Ringu0: Birthday, which was a prequel explaining Sadako (Samara for anyone who hasn't seen the original)'s power as well as an "aftermath" of what happens to the mom and her son after the original movie.

And yes, Leatherface "Scalps" your face, that's why he's called leatherface. He takes your face off and tans it and wears it as a mask made from human leather. The thing they left out, which was the glue holding the movie together, was the fact that the family was a family of CANIBALS. THEY EAT PEOPLE. Leatherface was originaly based on Ed Gein, who wore the skin of dead people, made furniture from their bones and lampshades from their skin, he had a belt buckle made of human nipples and he dug up and skinned his dead mother and MADE A SUIT out of her to wear when he didn't know what to do. (He would put it on and pretend he was her giving him orders because he'd never done anything "on his own" in life or growing up)

The remake took out the dinner scene, which was crucial to the original, as well as the canibalism aspect. They watered down one of the best horror movies in history and made it slick and full of action for the MTV Music video generation who can't WATCH anything that doesn't have action and tits every 7.3 seconds. The movie made no attempt whatsoever at REALLY horifying you, just stringing together a bunch of one-shot SHOCK moments. There's one scene in particular that sums up the comparison of both movies: The hammer that both Leatherface uses to smack his first victim in the head.

The original used a small, more percise hammer that took several blows, like the original's films timing and writing, that hits the viewers slowly, percisily, and ultimatily leading to an increase of horror till the very end.

The new Leatherface uses a sledgehammer with a single blow, and that's the kind of heavy handedness that the film delivers with almost every scene, hitting the viewer once with something fast and shocking and then giving up, ultimately making it a pale imatation of the original.

I just can't agree with you... I mean, the first one is a great movie, but its just not scary at all, i laughed to most of the scenes, especially the dinner scene... but its still a good movie overall... But i admit it would have been better if they had kept the cannibalism aspect in the sequel. would have loved to see leatherface momma taking a bite in erin's leg :P

I would answer that post myself, but the topic has already been covered in this article on New-skool Vs. Old-skool Horror

...How many people liked the remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (with it's horribly standard slasher movie rules, stupid baby kidnapping subplot, and goofy ending) more than the original one? How many moviegoers nowadays think that if a movie stops for more than two minutes to build some suspense that it's slow?...

...Did you know kids today don't even find The Exorcist scary? I guess it's kind of hard to be scared of the devil when you're 14 and pregnant....

I thought Leatherface used a sledge hammer in the original TCM - the smaller hammer is used later on by the grandfather when they've got Sally's head over the metal bucket. The key bit in that sequence is the shots of her eyes... great stuff.

Texas Chainsaw 4 wasn't that bad... I've actually liked all of them... I just wish they'd do a proper cut of Leatherface because there's some good stuff in the 2+ hour workprint version that's been floating around for years.

Anyhow... horror movies have never really scared me... If you're looking for something disturbing you're better off pulling out stuff like Last House On Dead End Street or In A Glass Cage... or any number of fucked up films about atrocities (ie: Man Behind The Sun, Salo)...

The Thing is totaly one of the best movies ever. It's got a perfect setting and ambiance, and I really love the "Who can you trust?" aspect of it, where anyone, even your best friend, might not be who they seem. It's one of Quentin Tarentino's favorite movies, and it's his basis of Reservoir Dogs: Bunch of people locked together, and one of them is not what they seem, so everyone starts turning on each other because they don't trust each other.

As for the Leatherface cut, wasn't it just recently released on DVD? 20-ish minutes of aditional footage, most of it dealing with the swamp fight between Leatherface and the big black dude. And in the first one, it's a regular mallet that he uses, it's a one-handed hammer that takes 4-5 hits to the head before the guys body drops to the floor and starts twitching and spazing..

THe Thing was probably the last truly classic film that Carpenter did. Halloween and Assault On Precinct 13 being earlier examples of that period.

I like how the original Thing is playing on tv in Halloween... unfortunately Carpenter kind of took a nose dive after that... Christine and They Live are passable - but certainly not as good...

The Leatherface dvd is the unrated cut, which is still almost an hour shorter than the workprint... btw - the big black dude is Ken Foree from Dawn Of The Dead...

I really liked Prince of Darkness and In The Mouth Of Madness. In The Mouth Of Madness is one of the only Lovecraftian movies that really seems to "get" the whole madness aspect of seeing Things Man Was Not Meant To See and where the line between reality and madness becomes very frayed.

I'm gonna have to try and track myself down a copy of that workprint, I'm certain it's gotta be available somewhere, because Leatherface had a lot of potential at being even more bad-ass, and an hour of missing footage sounds like it'll probably do the trick. :b

As for Ken Foree, he's playing Cpt. Spaulding's pimp brother in the sequel to House of 1000 Corpses. :D

Revok ( [ www.revok.com ] ) used to have one... but it doesn't look like they do anymore... there are, however, a lot of sites that come up if you run a search on Leatherface Workprint - none, however, are places I've dealth with - and all their workprints seem to carry different lengths.

Revok does, however, have some amazing stuff listed in their catalog and it's worth taking a look at.
