| Ketamine is an incredible entheogen when taken by its most desirable method of administration, intramuscular injection. I first became fascinated with ketamine after reading a few articles describing its psychedelic potential, particularly "The Ketamine Konundrum" by James Kent. According to Kent, on ketamine, "one enters a state of 'eternity'. This is not an eternity in the classic sense - meaning 'now' stretched on until the end of time - but 'eternity' in the singular sense, when all branches of linear time bend in on themselves and collapse into a timeless and eternal state of simultaneous existence."
Unfortunately, the psychedelic potential of ketamine is completely wasted when it is snorted, which I find results in a general feeling of intoxication (also nausea, dizziness, and mental confusion) which I do not particularly enjoy unless in combination with another drug. I was determined to give ketamine its chance to prove itself, however, as Kent and several other writers all agree that intramuscular injection is the best way to reach psychedelic emergent states.
Needless to say, I was quite nervous about attempting an injection for the first time. I spent hours reading up on the proper IM technique, and waited until I obtained ketamine that I knew to be free of impurities and cut. Fortunately, in Quebec it is VERY easy to obtain all the neccessary supplies to perform in injection: I bought a "preventative kit" from PharmaPrix for 1$ that included sterile water, syringes, alcohol swabs, filters, spoons..basically everything one needs (except for needles, which interestingly enough must be purchased seperately).
The injection turned out to be remarkably easy and completely painless. I choose the frontal outboard thigh as my injection site, massaged it to relax the muscle, then injected the liquid solution slowly into the muscle. I'd even go so far as to say that injected was a less unpleasant route of administration then snorting, which clogs my nose and results in an annoying drip..with injection, its simply a pinprick and then its done.
The first effects manifested themselves about 5-10 minutes after injection, and consisted of a warm, tingly feeling not dissimilar to nitrous oxide. The come up was very smooth and gentle, with no nauseau, and I lay back on my mattress with my eyes closed.
Soon thereafter, I entered into a state of complete dissociation which lasted for approximately 1-2 hours (my perception of time was severely altered). Unlike with DXM, I stayed completely conscious throughout the experience, which made it far easier to retain the memory of the experience and the insigts I arrived at during the trip. The two most remarkable effects of this dissociated, emergent state were the re-living of past events and the ability to mentally project myself into almost any place or situation. Simply by thinking about a past event or by consciously projecting myself to any given place, it was as though I was actually there and experiencing it! Furthermore, I was able to retain complete control over what memories/events I wanted to experience.
For example, I thought about the previous day I spent with Charlie and Jenn, and after the memory ended I had to actually convince myself that they weren't there in the room with me, thats how real the experiencing of the memory was. I wonder if by reliving memories and modifying them, one can alter the very fabric of one's own being..an idea explored, for example, in the recent film "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". Furthermore, by simply imagining a place, I was able to experience being there..all it took was to think of a beach, and I could practically feel the warm sand beneath me and the sun shining on my face.
IM ketamine certainly exceeded my wildest expectations! I found it so superior to snorting, that in fact if I was ketamine I would cry if someone put me in their nose. That said, DO NOT inject ketamine if you are at all psychologically susceptible to addition, because IM ketamine can be very addictive..in fact, I already feel very compelled to use again. |
