this is where i went after starlight2. lineup issues were resolved as opposed to last saturday, but still tons of people there. circus freaks on stilts running around everywhere made shit surreal, luc raymond's mixing was pretty crappy, eddie jasmin's was better. anyone who was at scream knows how fucking ill this venue is.
bung. next friday. techno fridays at circus get started.

ya G, you come on our fucking TECHNO forum with shit LIKE THIS MAN you'll get your FUCKING HEAD CHEWED OFF.

like this:

Akufen is only the best known minimal tech export in Montreal, his My Way LP has sold out numerous pressings in LP and CD form. He headlines virtually every Mutek festival and plays at Soiree Risquee every couple of months (nxt one Jan. 23rd read my fucking column)... has put out TONS of EPs on a bunch of labels over the last three years or so, and if you've heard any of his shit you have an idea of what it all sounds like. Media people think it's really cool that he uses radio samples in his tunes. in fact he could be sampling fucking whale farts, who gives a fuck it's an eigth of a second sound byte.
anyways, ya, akufen is solid, but COMPLETELY played out, I mean, for TECHNO people. maybe for you G, it would be cool to listen to... if you like that shit peep Deadbeat, he's like the ILL, constantly evolving postmodern version of Akufen. better yet, hit up Naw's shit, same general minimal tekky vein, but GOING SOMEWHERE... hahaha... .

seriously, i'm a big fan of Akufen, he's ill.

b) i got three decks working today. what do i end up doing with three decks? mixing hip hop with instrumentals and trip hop. that's what i wanted to hear... rappers riding deep repetitive bass heavy EQed out beats... wtf? maybe tomorrow it'll be 140 BPM tek.... had this fucking brain stroke where i sat there trying to figure out how to amalgamate 90-100 BPM hip hop with 140 BPM tek without playing recs at 45... on 3 decks... HOW??? this is what I want to do.. tired of playing realllly slow hip hop with deep house on 45 or with really fast booty records and shit.. i dunno. anyways i now own three working decks, ima be on some next level shit in a few weeks.

"no words, no samples, no music" = this is actually just a bit from a spool record i have, thought it adequately summed up the appeal of techno to me. yes there is melodic techno. i try to avoid it (but fail -all sound is inherently melodic).. and joel mull for example, master of melody imo, is one of my all time fave producers of ANY kind of music.

i'd like to think speed has nothing to do with this, seeing as i've only done it once on purpose, and (as everyone does) a few times incidentally i'm sure when doing unclean e about 6 or 7 years ago... and carlos, if doing e once in four years means i "do ecstasy" then sure, but i mean, come on. sure i've done drugs but i've gone thru being both a heavy drug user and a not-so-heavy drug user... now that i think of it, in fact, i'm sure this has strongly effected my musical tastes. the more that my drug intake is concentrated around say alcohol, the more i get into booty... i still have huge deep tek binges that occur months removed from any sort of intake of any drug (other than alcohol) even weed mind you... hmmm... maybe it's completely coincidental -definitely no real substantial evidence either way, but drugs may be a factor.

from the results of this thread, it may be a working assumption to conclude that you have to "have DONE speed to appreciate techno"... even once... th amount that you do it is irrelevant. acid, mush, e, meth, coke, these may all do the job also. meth and coke i dont know about so much... but i liked techno before i ever did pills (back in the blotter days blaaargh)... anyways, the last thing i wanted was for this to turn into a discussion about fucking drugs. does it all come down to that? i refuse to believe its so simple.

ya it was great to finally see you out in the real world cassius!

listen, we organizrs all agreed on it: this shit was gonna be hot and fucking badly ventilated; crwded in stairways and coatcheck; smokey air to breathe, and there was nothing we could do about it. in short, everyone, this was a RAVE.

on the other hand, we did rent eight or ten ?(ufot?anyone) industrial size fans, at no small cost, to help circulate the air throughout the night, and made sure that there was a sound curtain (no small cost) set up a foot or so in front of the windows, allowing us to keep some windows open all night. furthermore, the copious amount of spraypainting and painting was all done in advance so that no vapours remained in the building for the event.. so thank us at least that you didn't get poisoned.. though i understand breathing may have been considerably difficult. also understnd that whn the basement was closed, it created a substantial amount of crowding on the 2nd floor, resulting in less air to breathe, more humidity and smoke etc (and more toilet clogging) for everyone.

word.

soyfunk, maybe "thriving" is an exageration but without a doubt a lotta people still like DnB. bd's Friday is a solid night, many parties feature a DnB DJ or two, and the big names like Aphrodite, Goldie etc still sell their mix CDs en masse.. perhaps more in Europe mind you... unfortunately the 14-17 yr old demographic doesnt have much pull in the club or rave market, more on the CD buying (now downloading and burning and copying) market.

and yes, i think, and i'd like think, that we'll see fucking dirty ass booty shit come up big, and start morphing into other styles. Assault plays booty with DnB records; its only a matter of time before some nut produces a whole barrage of DnB beat/booty-lyric tracks, for example.
when Neoform starts playing fucking booty DnB then he can call himself Neoporn. or, better yet, DJNprn

ya dude when naw has a shit fit the skies will turn black and puss will ooze from every orifice of your fucking body, this is NOTHING.

i certainly think he's right on this one (it's all a big fat IMHO on the other hand) but in MHO anything with downbeats, 4/4, definite BPM is NOT ambient. it's dub tech, minimal tech... maurizio, basic channel, that's the originators of this sound, and you;ll find their records in the techno or minimal techno section always., sounds much like contemporary artists in the genre.

interesting though, is the fact that this is the type of beats that people no longer seem to release primarily on vinyl, but instead on CD, and now, with Thinner, on the net (i always wondered what was up with thinner, saw all their releases online and artist and shit, but NEVER saw a record in the store, i never got it.. NOW i understand)... doesnt make sense to me cause minimal tek, like any techno is for me a fucking joy to mix -though it maight not be AS rocking as Swedish or Detroit tek it still works on the dancefloor -Richie Hawtin's popularity, largely attained through his selection of minimal tech and largely dubby tek thru the late 90s (look at Consumed -there's NOTHING there, but he rocked that shit out for crowds of thousands) will attest to that.

anyways. ya. my two cents. thinner artists are predominantly minimal/dub tech.

also, neil, you dont have enough urls in your signature. i think you should add thinner also.

by DJ sarcastic.

i used to think techno was IT. no words, no samples, no music.

now i'm not so sure.
ya, i still love good tek, but i know that i'd rather hear Pink Floyd the Wall on Aria's sound system than, say, the new marco carola on zenit. hell i dont even listen to carola records in the store anymore -i used to buy 'em without listening to 'em, now i dont buy em and dont listen to 'em. i know exactly what they're gonna sound like anyways.

thing is, if i was DJing at Aria, i'd be much happier playing techno than Pink Floyd. sometimes i think techno is just made for DJs, cause its so fun to mix.

on the other hand though, if i was strung on e and speed and on the dancefloor (haha unlikely but possible, and a likely scenario for many clubgoers) i would also be happier hearing tek than pink floyd.

when i go vinyl shopping now, compared to 2 or 3 years ago, i buy so many different styles its insane. but 5 6 years ago, when i discovered tek, i wouldnt have bought ANYTHING out of the techno section. when you have tek, you build around it as a DJ, with more and more tek, cause all tek sounds good with other tek.. sounds bad with acid, bad with house/ prog trance, but good with full on tek.. sometimes you find a borderline track that works. now that i play retarded diverse sets occasionally, i've realized this. rarely will a ben sims track, or a glenn wilson track, find itself into a tweaked out acid/ booty/ old school mix for example. (although acid, booty, old school -or minimal tech, tech-house, breaks, electro, even hardcore -will all go together nicely)...

wtf is up with that?
why do people actually like to dance to techno? someone who ISNT a DJ please answer me that? arent you all just mindless drones who eat whatever you are served? why is tek still out there? or is it dead? is it just DJs producers and labels keeping it alive, the last remnants?

because hey, free dummy.

konflikt, naw, anyone, my comment here on this section

-this techno section is brand new. i dont need a new section that i have to go look in.
-i dont listen to much music online, sorry y'all but i just dont have time for that. i appreciate it nevertheless, and will check it out once in a while for that, but i literally have gigs of music and stacks of CDs that i've never listened to, let alone all these vinyls that I feel I shoudl know inside out, but dont
-so if you guys dont see me here dont get offended.

big up k i totally hear the acid revival -and how its being fucking murderated by halfassers like Liberators (not to say i dislike their tunes really, it just doesnt pass for old school acid and acid house)... i mean its so fucking easy to make acid house why doesnt some fuck start a hardcore acid house label and push it. Brian Zentz put out an acid ep on Tronic that was pretty 96-ish sounding; ESP still kicks out an acid jam or two on every release it seems... me i love playing acid sets but everyone seems to hate 'em, get disinterested and shit. fucking ADD bitches. anyways, due to that, i believe that an oldschool acid party would flop hardcore. only a few quads would show up and because a) they wanted to be oldschool thus aren't or b) they wanna hear acid techno ... and therefore c) they will leave not enjoying it or (if they have any brains) they will realize geezer isnt playing and will never come in the first place. fuck em

no G, Kops crew had like 16 DJs bands and beatboxers on the lineup for their own room (upstairs) so we couldn't infringe on their lineup. however, the DJs who were supposed to play from 7 AM - 10 AM dissapeared or something (i'm sorry i don't remember... somebody just told me I could play upstairs if I wanted to..) so I played upstairs and then Milton Clark played a bit after me... all the other DJs that were supposed to play downstairs from 3:30 AM onwards, including Philgood, Freebass, Kilobyte, Nter and Seko, had their sets cancelled unfortunately. all DJs were still paid, and i'd like to be able to promise some sort of 2k4 makeup party -we'll see what happens with that.

poisoned candY, yes, the musical structure was completely chaotic. I guess your ADD is not advanced enough yet to appreciate the veritable cornucopia of musical styles offered at 2k4. hah. my only dissapointment with the tunes was the excess of 80s cheese upstairs, but hey, that wasn't my jurisdiction, and USUALLY people seem to eat that shit up anyways.
