Stereobar hosts Remedy every second Friday with ill tek head Noah Pred on the resident tip

special guest this week is MIKE BRYANT, head of the Intrinsic Design label, of which I am a particularly huge fan...

Mike and Noah guarantee deep, abstract tek-house and techno, sick mixing, on a nice system in the cozy confines of the stereo bar. i`m hyping this shit a) cause i`m going and b) cause nonayall ravewavers are down with noah and his ill schtick, and it`d be cool if somayall would hearrrr dis, cause i know a lottayall would love it.

word. check out this site [ synapsedesign.ca ]
to hear some of noah`s mixes, and read up on his mad lengthy discography for a host of respected labels. big up.

first of all, i'm with nfrm here on the whole CD/vinyl, beatmatching/trainwrecking debate

second of all, I NEVER trainwreck. hahaha. once in a while, either due to skipping (usually) or the fact that i'm trying to mix on 3 decks (like on tuesday... just totally LOST the 3 deck vibe while mixing on the radio show).. but honestly, i dont wanna sound all poncey and shit (whatever the fuck that means/? anyone? colin?) i dont wanna sound pompous, but anyone who's been mixing for awhile knows that it's fairly easy to avoid a trainwreck if you concentrate, and that a trainwreck is really the only truly ugly thing a DJ can do in a set. it always sounds better to, for example, do a sudden cut, a pullback, or any cheap trick if your fucked for space, don't have time to beatmatch, etc.

third of all, i agree with the roughness edge, fishead, milton, re. jeff mills, i've always wanted to bring a raw, live sound to techno -but it can be done without trainwrecking, imo... i'm more about crunching the bass totally in the reds on one channel, for example, and riding the hi-s and a bito mids on the other.. creates a raw dirty sound... for example

lastly, i think (at least for ME) the reason i prefer vinyl has nothing to do with the actual mixing application of the medium, but has everything to do with OWNERSHIP, and CONSUMERISM in a COMMERCIALATED bullshit world yo. As a DJ, I like to have a fucking ton of records, I like to be able to pull out a slab of wax that I OWN, that others might not own, a rare white label, or a copy of planet rhythm uk number one, it has way more of an impact than playing a CD (which is invisible to the onlooker)... fact is when I play CDs it's cause i'm playing shit I DON'T OWN, or hasn't been pressed... in a sense it does come down to image, to ownership, to all these values that i am completely opposed to, yet, through techno and DJing and vinyl, have found a way to deal with happily in the modern world. In essence, my argument is that in this 21st century capitalist hell, we all express ourselves, inevitably, by what we DO (or what we DON'T) choose to consume. In my case, I express myself with RECORDS... if you're expressing yourself with MP3's, well, anyone can own that shit in a second if they have hi-speed internet, so basically your less authentic.. (no shots intended at CD-DJs, i have mad respect to you.. just trying to express my OWN point of view... WHY i DO what i DO.. not saying I'm RIGHT or CORRECT or anything) bung

yup, corey is right.

and you only need 2 mixers, as long as both monitors are hooked to the master... and (for example) you run mixer 2 into like channel 4 on the master and just set it at a decent volume... (like at 2k4 for example)...

subculture: ghetto sound for so many reasons... 1) our set up 2) lack of space in the basement 3) krinjah's sound system RIP

reminded me of a huge ass loft party in a huge, goregeous loft... electro and related techno styles sounded amazing in the space imo, it was a really solid turnout,a wicked vibe and people danced all night. runner and the jet, i thought, put on an incredible live show... not really my style of music but i was totally digging it, reaally psychedelic shit, and it can't be easy to sing live and shit in a club. sick beats, wicked sound, complete pros. mini got shit started, g and phil rocked the joint til saturday 1030, droppin electro flavoured tek, some banging chicago-ish shit, just an all out wicked night, wicked tunes and amazing people. thanks to all that came.

my two cents on Josh Wink:

saw him play a couple of times pre 2000 and though he was playing perhaps music that wasnt 100% up my alley, he was fucking ON. i always thought of him as one of the best DJs i ever saw in terms of set programming, EQing (this guy understands his bass frequency) and long, smooth beat mixing... I also saw him at that fuckhole Illume once, where he spent the whole time talking to Tiga, playing shitty house and not bothering to even try, that sucked. (when I saw Richie in that fuckhole Nexxt, same spot, reminded me a lot of that Wink set actually)...

Another shitty DJ, this'll piss some people off:
Adam X... I've heard this guy trainwreck a BUNCH of times, though he's also constantly playing really fucked up tracks with weird beats structures and shit... still a fun DJ to hear, but ROUGH.

ditto on the LAFLECHE also, he's fucking BOOOORRRRRRRRRRIIIINNNG. i enjoyed some of his pre-2000 sets at Sona mind you, he used to be able to mix. more recently he always sounded like he was rolling on E and barely even able to keep a handle on his set, fucking cutting highs and bass and forgetting about it, struggling to cue the next track up, a complete mess.

the difference between gabber and hardcore is like the difference between electro and electro. it all depends whose talking, it's just a matter of opinion on a subject where there is absolutely no consensus. you can yammer all you want but it's impossible to find out WHAT gabber IS, or WHAT hardcore actually IS, there just words whose meaning is constantly changing, and they mean something different to everyone at any point in time. but carlos, if you're looking for the OFFICIAL source of truth on the matter, check out [ www.theresnosuchthingyoufuckingmoron.com... ] !onelove and such.

Stacey Pullan SUCKS ASS
Cisco Ferreira ... SHITTIEST LIVE SETS. great producer, but a scam artist when he plays live
BANDO... WTF is UP with this guy? his tunes SUCK

can we diss local DJs also? i've been doing a lot of that lately....
XL.... YAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWNNNNN so fucking boring. smokes more cigarettes in an average set than the total amount of records he plays.

Devilfish.. thought they sucked live...
Honestly though i haven't heard that many BAD out-of-town DJs... there's a lot of terrible DnB DJs, can I bash them on the tek forum? Jumpin Jack Frost... Kenny Ken.. Marcus Intalek or whatever his name is... these guys don't even PRETEND to mix...

Christian Smith I find boring nowadays ya, but I heard him play (for the first time) at some fucked up party that got busted, i forget the name (barbara and yaz played too) D-something... and he was good that night even with the ceiling plaster falling all over the decks and shit.

I heard Jeff Mills play a horrid set once, but I heard him play a mindblowing one also...

Ya, Atkins, May, old news... Beltram also, he sucks.
Rino Cerrone sucks ass as a DJ, makes good tunes.

sorry man, for one thing I had no idea you were the promoter. Also ya, it was fucking really hard to mix on that setup. I don't blame you guys for soundsystem problems or anything, for five bucks it was well worth it for anyone who attended.

You're right, i wasn't supposed to play. Mike asked me to tag with him, and i thank you guys for allowing me to do that. I didn't mean to defamate your party, in fact i said thanks and i meant it, props for doing underground shit. sorry, i guess I don't like the Hacker, though some people might, i'm allowed to have an opinion on that, that's one part i won't apologize for. But whatever, anyone can diss my music selection, it's just a matter of taste. I far preferred the hardcore beats you were serving up.

Oh, that was Pearl Jam... okay. once again, props on mixing rage and rock with 4/4 beats, like i said that takes balls and it's fucking cool.

Sorry i have a big fucking mouth, but I thank you na, and anyone else involved in organizing this, hopefully we will actually meet in person one day.

cool party i guess, had a good vibe though not many people while i was there. as usual at tango horrible sound, blown speakers, a really task to try mixing there. got to hear na play for the first time, he had balls mixing Rage against the machine with hardcore, and some nirvana song (or somthing that sounded like it but prolly wasnt) with shitty techno. all in all his set however, came off like an extended flowless trainwreck. was good when one record was playing... anyways, thanks to the peeps that did this, underground shit and so on...

ya, i was dissapointed to hear both the track selection and mixing skills of great white hype and mister mostest... they're cool people and all but fuck, that was pretty shit... i wanted to hear radarsat-1 and melon, and even jordan, but i couldnt make it thru 1. 5 hrs of that crap.

had fun still a bit i guess... turning off the light was key, i shoulda done that before i even started playing, woulda been a better vibe.

thing that pissed me off most... after playing a whole bunch of anthony rother, daniel liu, aux 88, I-T, and all this classic "electro", this girl who shall remain nameless comes up to me and says "is anyone gonna play any electro?" fuck, it just goes to show how retarded people's conception of music is nowadays... electro is OFFICIALLY dead. i dont know WHAT i was playing, but i guess it wasn't electro, since it ddidn't have like punk melodies and some stupid bitch singing off key in it or something. anyways...

ya there's no point, also, comparing ravewave and memf in this context a) cause memf is completely dead and b) cause the shitty djs had nothing to do with either site, they're kops crew dudes.

i never thought i'd be uttering this sentence, but I firmly agree with Roy Orbison on this.

Plastikman : more minimal, yes.

still, this was minimal tech-house, not minimal fucking abstract madness that I wanted. It was basically a set that any number of local tech house bozos could've played (no offence)..

like i said last night, imagine you paid to see Metallica (or any other fucking band in the world) for their album release tour. And then the band didn't play ONE single song of their new album; in fact they played a whole set that didn't even really sound like their new album. Wouldn't you be pissed off? Instead all these fucko moneyed snob ass cocksuckers on e felt they were so special cause they went out on a fucking sunday to this snazzy shit hole and got to listen to some cocksucker DJ who their friend told them was good or some shit.

Diehard plastikman fans were undoubtedly dissapointed, just as they have constantly been, imo, since de9:closer to the edit, perhaps even before that.

Get your fucking shit together Richie; there is a backlash among your ORIGINAL fans. all these techno fuckers are the same, they get big by making innovative, groundbreaking shit, and then they lame out, water down, and sell out at the first opportunity.

u have a good point G that there's a whole mass of electronic music/raver type peeps that just aren't exposed to the minimal techno artists (ie akufen et al.) here in montreal; the crowds seem to be really segregated. one thing i've always wanted to see is more of these dudes playing at 'underground' parties -witness flux where, thanks to naw's participation local minimal artists like Pheek (check his shit out G, it's amazing) and naw performed...

as far as referring other producers i'd have to add to naw's list any Basic Channel label releases, especially early Maurizio releases (the m1, m2, m3 etc series)... Maurizio laid down a lot of the groundwork for this style imo

another dude who did that was Mike Ink with the kompakt label, also records at M5, Volfgang Voight (i think that's him, anyone?) and his brother Reinhard Voight (am i right here guys, or totally wrong?)... and a ton of other names. early kompakt shit.

also find richie hawtin's de9:closer to the edit, a great mix of minimal tek, you'll find a whole wack of artists from listening to that mix; (better yet find the tracklisting online and check out every fucking artist on that list)
