Alexander Graham Bell patents the Telephone, a device for transmitting the human voice along wires via electricity. Originally envisioned as a way to transmit music to homes from a central location, it soon gains popularity as a means of communication.

Within a short time after filing the patent, the Bell Company (A. Graham Bell's newly formed incorporation) is besieged by lawsuits and challenges to the patent.

"In all, the Bell Company fought out thirteen lawsuits that were of national interest, and five that were carried to the Supreme Court in Washington. It fought out five hundred and eighty-seven other lawsuits of various natures; and with the exception of two trivial contract suits, IT NEVER LOST A CASE." - The Tribute to the Telephone Site

but he didnt invent teh telephone! Antonio Meucci, an Italian living in Cuba who moved to NY, did. The only reason its invention is accredited to Bell is because Meucci fell gravely sick and couldn't afford to pay for the patent anymore. So his wife sold it at auction so she could buy her husband medication.
