I am at a total loss for words on this one. Reputable people that work at prestigious laboratories are talking about SETI-hackers and stuff like, you know…virus from outer space! Blame Blair for this one.

Add one more worry to the computerized world of the 21st century. Could a signal from the stars broadcast by an alien intelligence also carry harmful information, in the spirit of a computer virus? Could star folk launch a "disinformation" campaign -- one that covers up aspects of their culture? Perhaps they might even mask the "real" intent of dispatching a message to other civilizations scattered throughout the Cosmos.

I can just see it now..."GOOD DAY AND GREETINGS FROM PLUTO, I AM KING JAHAFEE OF THE PLUTONIAN TRIBE AND I WISH YOUR HELP IN TRANSFERRING $50,000,000...".

The amount of stars that could respond would be less than what they stated, 400.. If that is the amount that are within 50 light years.

If Radio signals have been travelling for 50 light years, it would take an equivelent amount of time for aliens to respond. So in 50 years, only stars 25 light years away would be close enough to receive and respond to a message withing 50 years.

If a signal travels for 8 light years to a star, it would take another 8 light years for a response to get to us.
