JUDGE GIVES MORGAN GRAMS CHOICE: DRUG TREATMENT OR PAY HIGH BAIL

ANOKA, Minn. (AP) -- An Anoka County judge has given the son of Sen. Rod
Grams the choice of going to a drug treatment center or paying $50, 000 bail
for testing positive for cocaine and marijuana.

Morgan Grams was charged last year with car theft, check fraud and
transaction card fraud. Under the terms of his release, he was supposed to
remain drug-free.

The Anoka County judge gave Grams, 21, his choices after learning the
results of Grams' drug test Tuesday.

The younger Grams also was charged with gross misdemeanor damage to property
and misdemeanor disorderly conduct after a Jan. 8 vandalism incident at a
convenience store.

He was accused of slamming a glass door into a wall at the SuperAmerica
store, causing $350 in damage, and knocking over a display. An investigator
for the Anoka County sheriff' s office said he witnessed the entire incident
and that Grams appeared to be intoxicated.

Last July, Grams also was stopped in a borrowed rental vehicle after his
father called the Anoka County sheriff for help finding his son. A deputy
found 10 bags of marijuana and several beer cans in the vehicle, but Grams
was not initially questioned about the items, leading to questions about
whether he had received special treatment because of his father' s position.
