Boosting Local Share An Incentive
A Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics proposal to shift the share of drug
forfeiture proceeds from the state to local agencies could spur more
aggressive law enforcement.
Under current law, money derived from forfeitures is given 80 percent to
the state, 20 percent to the local law enforcement agency involved in
seizing the assets.
The bureau wants to reverse that percentage.
Not to disparage any county's agencies, but drug laws might be more
aggressively enforced with this incentive.
It would, however, have to be carefully monitored by the state to ensure
that the rights of citizens are not abused.
