GRAND JURY TO EXAMINE BOTCHED DRUG RAID

LEBANON, Tenn. -- A special grand jury will review findings from the
investigations of a police drug raid that resulted in the death of a
Lebanon retiree, Police Chief Billy Weeks said.

Two Lebanon police officers shot and killed John Adams, 61, after they said
he fired a shotgun at them. Police were supposed to raid the house next
door. Although the search warrant had the right address, it contained a
description of the Adams home.

Adams' wife, Loriane, said she and her husband believed they were the
victims of a home invasion when police kicked in their door about 10 p.m.

Shatena Cowan, the 38-year-old woman who was the intended target of the
raid, was arrested early Wednesday after a domestic dispute at a local
motel. Cowan was charged with cocaine possession after officers searched
her purse, Weeks said.

Weeks said the special grand jury, likely to convene next week, will review
the results of internal probes by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and
Lebanon police into the Oct. 4 shooting.

Weeks fired Lt. Steve Nokes and put Officer Tommy Maggort on unpaid
administrative leave. Both were involved in surveillance before the raid
and Nokes was at the raid. Officers Greg Day and Kyle Shedran, who entered
the home and shot Adams, were placed on paid administrative leave.

Nokes, head of the departments narcotics unit, has appealed his dismissal
for violating department policy and procedures, Weeks said.
