there was lots of hd-based players before the ipod...

The creative nomad has been around for a long time also... Since 2000 I think for the 6gig model

umm, internally, yes it does.

since it's a mini hard drive, it's got 4 rotating platters inside it, meaning if you drop it while it's spinning you can severely damage it...

yeeeahh.. well i wouldn't recoment repeating such things, or you could end up with it crashing.. HDs *can* take bumps and bangs, but it can also break..

cloud9ine: there is no such thing as a HD with no moving parts.. if the ipod was based on solid state storage it would probably cost 10x the price at least

i *think* what yer tech friend meant was there weren't any moving parts like the first rev of ipod.. (the jog wheel) it had a rotating wheel, whereas the new ipods have a touch sensitive wheel type thingy that's stationary..
