i don't think ambient music could ever reachthe popular stage... unless we want people to be in a meditative state all the time... i'm not a real fan of ambient electronics though.

well I dont listen to or make music becasue it is or isnt popular or speaks to the masses for me its all about pure expression... for me ambient music meaning compleatly beatless material is the equivelent to a painting.... either you like it or you hate it...

"This is the sound of the underground!"
No it's not. What are you, a fucking worm?
The sound of the underground would be *DnB Beatboxing* Mind the gap *beatboxing* Stand clear of the doors *beatboxing*

I like chicane and orbital. I'm indifferent towards Moby and the word pop to me has no significance anymore. If the song is to my taste i'll listen to it/buy it.

My Bloody Valentine had a couple of tracks (Soon, To Here Knows When) that were ambient as all fuck and made it to pop radio (Brian Eno even referred to one of them as "the vaguest piece of music ever to be a hit" or something to that effect)... incredible stuff, imho.

Of course, I tend to do everything I can to ignore genres... once you have a genre you have effectively started defining what something can be, which means you've also started defining what it can't be. I tend to avoid labels that come up with genre names to describe their sound.

Didn't Jean-Michel Jarre manage to do that back in the 80's?

for some reason I feel compelled to direct everyone to Glass' orchestration of Aphex Twin Icht Hedral (from Donkey Rhubarb)... Glass also did a bizarre remix for S'Express... wonderful stuff.
