THERE are some things that 15-year-old boys do behind closed doors that should remain filed under the heading "private and secret".

These are special moments, when a boy takes matters into hand and feels like a man, all-powerful and potent.

But for one 15-year-old boy, that moment of privacy has been shattered by some school friends who leaked a video tape of him acting in what can only be described as an embarrassing manner.

He's been called the Star Wars Kid and the video of him has been distributed through various sites on the Net and watched by a few million people who enjoy seeing other people make a goose of themselves.

The video shows a large lad, who could probably benefit from eating a little less junk food, living out his fantasy, swinging a golf-ball retriever as if it's a double-ended light sabre in the style of Darth Maul, the baddie from Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace.

For a few brief moments, in the boy's head, he can feel the Force. This kid is in the zone.

Unfortunately, the Star Wars Kid made the mistake of filming himself in action, and then the second mistake of leaving the video around where other people could get their hands on it, and put it on the Net through the Kazaa file-sharing system that has a few hundred million users.

And then people added to it, putting the glowing bits on to the end of his golf-ball retriever and sound effects to help with the whole Star Wars feel.

At first, with a few million downloads of the video, the poor lad became a victim of universal ridicule. Then, perhaps because he really can use the Force, he evolved into a Net anti-hero.

Andy Baio's blog [ Waxy.org ] decided that good Jedi wannabes shouldn't ridicule a boy and, with the help of a French-speaking mate, went to the trouble of tracking him down.

Baio is clearly impressed at the impact the boy's video has had.

"It only took two weeks for the video to spread around the world," Baio writes at his site. "Raven Software's Bryan Dube added the Star Wars effects on April 24, a mere five days after it originally appeared to the Internet.

"A week later, both videos were linked on every major gaming and technology-related website, forum, and chat room online."

It turns out the Star Wars Kid is Ghyslain (whose last name has been kept secret), a 15-year-old boy in Quebec.

To help Ghyslain deal with his embarrassment, Baio collected donations. After seven days, The Star Wars Kid fund had raised more than $6600, which will be used to buy him a 30Gb iPod, and a Darth Maul lightsabre replica signed by Ray Park (the actor behind Darth Maul).

"The outpouring of support has been staggering, far beyond what I ever expected," Baio says.

"I wasn't sure we would be able to raise enough for a 15GB iPod, but here we are. Thanks again to all who donated, and thanks to the Star Wars Kid himself for making all this possible. Geeks like us need to stick together."
