the problem really is that everywhere you look you see adds for things like nicorette or the patch, and you have all these people telling you "you can't quit on your own, it's too tough", so really it just re-inforces you to NOT quit..

You get the slightest craving and suddenly you think it's the end of the world, not because of how intense the craving really is, but because everyone's been TOLD that the cravings are soooooooo bad.

Those patches and gums really just help fuel things even more; they're telling you you can't quit without them, and people believe it, so instead of cigarettes they're now buying patches and gum, but they still haven't gotten over their addiction.. They'll cut back, cut down, and then after a couple of days "clean" they give up and go back to smoking because it's "so hard"..

Addictive as the nicotine is, it's nowhere near heroin; THAT's a bitch to quit. If you cold-turkey that you can die! A couple of weeks of stress and "bitchyness" is nothing compared to what some people go through.

In the words of a 2-foot tall muppet; "Do or do not, there is no try"
I'm feeling your norks right now..

it<s funny, for me it's easy to quit smoking. I dont understand how people can be addicted to this, i once was a big smoker, and now i only smoke when i drink alot or go at partys on weekend days. Iv been doing that for years and iv never returned to my former 12 cigarettes a day.

You can begin to stop smoking at home, then stop smoking at work and so on and so forth. So before you know it, there is less and less circumstances where you need a cigarette.

one of the other major problems with quitting smoking is that people are creatures of habit; we love routine and association.. A certain song reminds us of our ex, have a coffee first thing in the morning, eat eggs and bacon saturday mornings, go to a specific club every thursday, watch a certain TV show monday nights..

The same thing gets done with the cigarettes; finish supper, have a smoke. Wait for the bus, have a smoke. Wait on the phone, have a smoke. Done having sex, have a smoke.. The cravings aren't so much a physical problem but a psychological one, where you've got an established routing and associations that have to be broken, because it feels "wrong" to not follow the routine you've established and held up for so long.

Instead of sitting down on the sofa after supper like you used to when you had your cigarette, go for a half-hour walk. Instead of eating at the restaurant downstairs on your lunch break, bring a sandwich and eat outside. Instead of having a smoke while waiting for the bus, bring a book. Break the old habits and replace them with new, healthier ones. Establish a NEW routine and new associations that DON'T involve smoking, and you're not going to notice the cravings as much.

In my opinnion, from both observation and participation, there are really only 2 kinds of people who smoke:

1-People that are able to smoke intermitently and without the need to smoke on a regular basis
2-People who are PHYSICALLY ADDICTED to tobbacco and its ingestion.

Scientifically, the later makes up approx 10% of all smokers(see health Canada)... I have the unfortunately reality of being part of the 2nd group, and I can tell you from personal experience, quitting means some of the following :

-fevers
-sweats
-shakes
-migranes
-severe irritability
-nausea
-insomnia
-rage
-... (to name a few)

I have quit before, and I will again, but to take this addiction lightly or to downplay its affect on quitters whom are physically addicted would be like saying quitting heroin is a walk in the parc; cause frankly, their is a reason why the two drugs are often compared.

That being said, it is a test of strength and will power to the max, and the outcome can only be positive(both for ones health and finances), because smoking will kill you, there is no doubt about that, its only a question of how long and how much money it will take...

AND FOR THE RECORD, ANYTHING YOU SMOKE CAN GIVE YOU CANCER, ANYTHING...

Ufot-i really need to quit oreos...

IAN! You can do it man, just take it one day at a time, make every day count, drink lots of water, eat lots of carrots, deep breaths, excercise, splash water on the face when craving gets bad, be phycisal, walk lots, DO NOT talk about the act of smoking, just address stupid cravings and how they make you feel, dont let your mind fool you, YOU CAN DO IT!

uFOT-support, it exists for a reason!

Thats totally my point, you can erase those associations one by one. I did that with marijuana also. Instead of stoping all at once, you can work on associations/cisrcumstances one by one.

I've stop smoking. It's been a month, I think.
My grand mother just died from lung cancer. It's been so hard to watch her become sicker and sicker day after day during the holidays and to see all the family being so sad. And when she was on morphine, god I don't even want to think about it.
Anyways it was a big eye opener for me.
And I was feeling so disgusted everytime I smoked a cigarette.
I've just stop. And I'm lucky, it was so easy.
I'm feeling portfolio right now..

ya i'm finding it real tough, even though each cigarette just makes me feel like shit...i'm convinced it's not physical for me, like if cigarettes just stopped existing magically and i didn't know what they were i wouldn't crave anything, it's totally psychological...

the worst battles are in your own mind i suppose...
