Terra 3 represents a return to a thing of the past: The rave With the gradual maturing and acceptance of electronic music in the 21st century, revellers mourn the loss of a unique phenomenon in the history of popular culture: the rave. As afterhours clubs and bars become more willing to invite electronic music promoters and consumers into their establishments, and as dancers, DJs and producers age, the time-consuming and stressful task of organizing a bona fide rave is rarely undertaken. In fact, the summer of 2007 is virtually rave-free, save for this weekend's massive Terra 3 event, organized by Cham and Axel Klein five years after the massive success of Terra 2. "The rave scene is almost dead," Cham concurs, "and there are only one or two with more than 400 people in a year in Montreal. I think promoters are scared to throw a big project because it's harder than before to get the crowd to come to your party - the clubs and afterhours took over the scene." Cham and Axel certainly weren't scared to program their event on a massive scale, as Terra 3 features more than 30 DJs showcasing a who's who of the Montreal electronic music scene's top trance, electro, happy hardcore, freeform, techno and breaks selectors in three rooms alongside live performances from shit-hot Saboteur artists Omnikrom and Numero#. Axel holds an interesting perspective on the afterhours/rave distinction: "A rave is a party and an afterhours is a DJ-worshipping place. That's how we see it nowadays. All those huge DJs coming to afterhours clubs leaves no place to party freely, because people are so obsessed with seeing the number one DJ of the world or whatever. Lately the cult of DJing is taking over the world and leading to overpriced tickets. It's sad to see this happen because people don't seem to go out to party, they go out because of the hype of a certain DJ, and they will think it's good because it costs $100 to get in the club." Afterhours clubs are regular businesses with common concerns, sustaining investment or eliminating competition for the sake of their profit margins. Raves do not suffer from the same obstacles. "It may sound cheesy," Cham told me, "but every time that someone comes to tell me that they are having fun at the party, it makes me realize the real reason why I'm promoting."
