From the Toronto Star, April 18 2004 - Pay pensioners same as refugees?

New refugee plan eyes small cities March 11.

I think the effort to resettle refugees in smaller communities is an
excellent effort. These refugees may find it easier to integrate into a
smaller community especially if accompanied by some of their
compatriots.

I also found it interesting that the federal government provides a
single
refugee with a monthly allowance of $1,890.00, and each can also get an additional $580.00in social assistance for a total of $2,470.00. This
compares very well to a single pensioner who after contributing to the
growth and development of Canada for 40 to 50 years can only receive a
monthly maximum of $1,012.00 in old age pension and Guaranteed Income
Supplement.

Maybe our pensioners should apply as refugees!

Lets send this to all Canadians, so we can all be pissed off and maybe
we
can get the refugees cut back to $1,012.00 and the pensioners up to
$2,470.00 and enjoy some of the money we were forced to submit to the
Government over the last 40 or 50 years.

i don't think 2k makes up for the possibly dead family members and life that you had to leave behind in hte country of your birth. And 2k per month is hardly a high flying lifestyle.

Not the point. Pensioners are getting half than what refugees are getting... I personally find that unfair even considering their plight.

is that an email you received or do you have a story to go with that? i didn't see a link.

we can't expect refugees to eventually contribute to society and the economy if we don't give them a leg to stand on - do we really want them to come here and be homeless or drug addicts? we have to help them out somehow. But I would be very interested in seeing articles that back up those statistics.

[ www.cic.gc.ca ] interesting link re: private sponsorship of refugees

Here is states that refugeees are only financially assisted for one year or until they are self sufficient - whichever comes first. Pensioners are supported until they die.

Information on exactly how much money refugees get when they initially arrive in Canada. A single male refugee would get a cheque for $1425 his first month, and then that would fall:

I think this demonstrates that those figures quoted in the email are false.

no problem. lots of right wing groups like to send out stuff like this to stir up trouble. they can make it sound really factual when they put effort into it.
