DARE TO INNOVATE

Same issue. New city.

Rock Island is following the path Davenport already trudged concerning D.A.R.E., community support and its effectiveness.

D.A.R.E.’s downfall, again, is its inability to conclusively prove it diminishes drug use. Maybe it should abandon that claim, if not nationally, then in the Quad-Cities, and focus on what it does do.

D.A.R.E. stands as a great tool to build relationships between our next generation and our law enforcement professionals. It builds respect for law enforcement, and not incidentally helps remind police officers that most kids are unlike those they encounter on 911 calls.

What D.A.R.E. needs is a coordinated commitment (that means cash) from cities and schools (that means local taxpayers).

It also needs a developed curriculum so that D.A.R.E. officers remain effective teachers in classrooms, not just show and tell.

What it doesn’t need is an expensive national curriculum and a half dozen different community boards independently struggling with the fund-raising and staffing.

Student Hunger Drive. Junior Achievement. Boys and Girls Clubs. All are wonderful Quad-City wide, centrally managed programs that work with our schools.

There’s room for one more.
