CANADIAN IS CONVICTED OF SMUGGLING $1 M HEROIN

CHAMPLAIN - A Canadian athlete has been convicted of smuggling nearly
six pounds of heroin across the border in northern New York, federal
prosecutors said.

Kofi Yevakpor, 35, was arrested Oct. 18 by U.S. Customs and Border
protection at the Champlain crossing after a search of his luggage
turned up an estimated $1 million worth of heroin.

He was convicted by a federal jury Tuesday of two charges, and faces
sentencing in federal court in June, court documents said.

Yevakpor, a professional sprinter, immigrated to Canada from Ghana in
1994 and has competed internationally.
