YOKOHAMA, Oct. 27 (Kyodo) Antinarcotics officials from 16 nations,
including China and Thailand, began a fiveday meeting in Yokohama, south
of Tokyo, on Monday to discuss measures for preventing the smuggling of
drugs via sea.

The conference, sponsored by Japan's Maritime Safety Agency (MSA) and the
U.N. International Drug Control Program (UNDCP), will hold seminars in
which UNDCP officials present ways to pursue suspected ships and
investigative techniques for searching vessels, the MSA officials said.

The MSA and the U.S. Coast Guard will conduct a mock seizure Tuesday of a
smuggling ship using patrol ships and aircraft in Tokyo Bay, the officials
said.

Other participating countries include Australia, Brunei, Cambodia, India,
Malaysia, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, South Korea, Russia,
Vietnam and Britain.
