MAKE DRUGS A NO-NO

The Post's Feb. 10 editorial "Yes on Aid to Colombia" endorsed economic aid
to Colombia to counteract the drug trade.

A few months ago, Colombia's president visited the United States and
proposed a massive financial aid program to his country. He reasoned that
such aid would boost Colombia's economy and enable the country to end its
dependency on the drug industry, thereby driving the drug trade from his
country. Several senators endorsed such aid and said they would draft
legislation to provide it.

How naive can you be?

Does anyone believe that if Colombia caused the drug industry to leave it
wouldn't simply move to another Latin American country and continue to
supply the U.S. market?

Until we make drug use socially unacceptable, the way tobacco has been made
a no-no, we will not solve the drug problem. When is The Post going to
realize that our drug problem is an American problem, not a Colombian problem?
