JUDGE' ' S JURISDICTION QUESTIONED IN WEEDSTOCK CASE

BARABOO, Wis. - A man facing drug charges after he was arrested
on the Weedstock festival grounds last week has questioned the
jurisdiction of the judge handling his case.

Benjamin R. Trapp, 39, of Madison appeared Tuesday before Circuit
Judge Virginia Wolfe on a felony count of manufacturing/delivery of
marijuana and misdemeanor counts of contempt of court and disorderly
conduct.

The drug charge stems from a police search of his vehicle on the
grounds of the festival, which promoted legalization of marijuana.

Defense attorney Peter L. Steinberg of Madison said the misdemeanor
charges are allegedly related to resistance against the order to clear
the festival site.

Steinberg contends that Wolfe did not have jurisdiction to order the
site cleared, so the search of Trapp' s vehicle was also improper.

The arrest was one of a dozen made Friday at Weedstock.
