ADDICTS' PRESENCE

A medical complex at 3707 E. Shields Ave. is opening a Primary Acute Care
facility. It is our understanding that they are going to be operating a
methadone clinic at this location. The McLane Revitalization Group feels
this is not in the best interest of the neighborhood, to open a facility at
which drug addicts will be arriving on a daily basis.

The patients are drug addicts -- they may be on their way to recovery but
are not there yet. If taking one drug to cure the habit of another is their
choice of recovery, perhaps an industrial part of the city would be more
suitable for the location of the methadone clinic.

We are concerned with the pedestrian traffic from students attending nearby
elementary and high schools, along with the many senior citizens who live
and take daily walks in this location. Their paths should not cross with
the undesirable elements that a methadone clinic would bring to this area.

The increased traffic at the intersection of Shields and Millbrook avenues
is already dangerous enough without the additional impact of a large number
of patients coming for a daily dose of drugs. This area is part of Fresno's
revitalization plan; bringing a methadone clinic into the heart of this
community would be the sure death of serenity that this neighborhood has
known since its birth.

We have been faced with this battle before, and have won. Now citizens of
this neighborhood will come together in an effort to defend our livelihood.
Those with concerns should voice them to City Council members and the city
Planning Commission.
