AUTHORITIES SAY METH LAB FOUND IN BUILDING OWNED BY LAWMAKER

ELK RIVER, Minn. (AP) -- Bail was set Monday for three people including the
daughter of a state legislator who were arrested on drug charges last week.

Patrick John McKay, 19, Dwight Preston Steele, 20 and Jeana Schumacher, 18,
were charged in Sherburne County on Monday with conspiracy to manufacture
methamphetamine.

The two men were living in a building rented from Rep. Leslie Schumacher,
DFL-Santiago, mother of Jeana Schumacher. McKay was once Jeana Schumacher'
s fiance.

Bail was set at $50, 000 for Steele, $30, 000 for McKay and $5, 000 for
Jeana Schumacher.

Jeana Schumacher and McKay are also charged with child endangerment because
their 8-month-old son allegedly was present when methamphetamine was made
or sold.

No charges are expected against Leslie Schumacher. She said Sunday she had
no knowledge of the alleged drug lab in her building.

" I didn' t even have a key to the building, " she said. " It was their home."

For the past month, Jeana Schumacher and her son had stayed mostly in
Princeton, the legislator said. The criminal complaint said Jeana
Schumacher was seen entering and leaving the Santiago building several
times last week.

Deputies who searched the building said they found a tent in the living
room that contained a sleeping bag, children' s toys and stuffed animals.
They also found more toys and a crib, marijuana pipes, bongs and other drug
paraphernalia, court records indicate.

The deputies also said they found a propane tank, toluene and muriatic
acid, all of which can be used to make methamphetamine.

" If these allegations are true, I am outraged that my trust was violated
and that my family, friends and neighbors could have been placed in danger,
" Leslie Schumacher said.
