POT SEIZURE LARGEST SINCE '98 AT SAN YSIDRO CROSSING

Authorities found 2,184 pounds of pot hidden in a trailer hauling a dune
buggy this weekend, making it the largest marijuana seizure at the San
Ysidro border crossing in two years, U.S. Customs officers said.

Agents arrested a 34-year-old San Diego man. His name was not released.

"Our officers worked through Sunday processing this largest single seizure
at San Ysidro since 1998," U.S. Customs spokesman Vince Bond said yesterday.

Customs inspectors removed the pot from the floor and walls of the trailer
after a narcotics-sniffing dog alerted them as the red Dodge Ram and the
trailer were waiting to clear customs Saturday, Bond said. The marijuana
was wrapped in 522 packages.

In 1998, Customs officers processed a 2,670-pound seizure; in 1996, a
4,540-pound load was detected.
