Irving police shot and killed a 60 year-old man while serving a narcotics
search warrant in Dallas on Sept. 28.

Juan Fernandez was shot after confronting police at close range with a large
caliber handgun, according to police reports.

Police records indicate two officers entered a residence in the 2500 block
of Kenesaw St. in Dallas at about 11-40 p.m. Police said Fernandez
confronted the officers with a gun after they entered and made their way to
the back of the house.

According to police reports, Fernandez continued to hold officers at bay
after one of the officers fired his weapon. The second officer at the scene
then fired at Fernandez, police said.

Police said four shots were fired during the standoff. However, there is no
indication that Fernandez shot at the officers.

Reports indicate no injuries to the officers. Fernandez died before an
ambulance could arrive at the scene.

Two other females were reportedly in the house at the time of the shooting.
Although neither was injured, police said a woman was transported to the
hospital after complaining of chest pains.

David Tull, Irving police spokesperson, said the department is conducting an
internal investigation into the shooting.

"That is standard for a shooting investigation," Tull said. "The officers
are given a three-day administrative leave. But they can have as much time
off as they need following a shooting."
