DEA SCIENTIST TO DISCUSS 'DESIGNER DRUGS'

As teen use of designer drugs is on the rise, Naperville officials are
preparing to combat the problem through parental outreach.

Officials from Naperville School District 203 and Indian Prairie School
District 204 are teaming up with the Naperville Police Department and the
U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to educate parents about the next
generation of dangerous substances.

Dr. David Gauvin, a DEA drug science specialist, will be the lead speaker
Tuesday at a seminar called Designer Drugs 2000 -- The Effects on Your Body.

Gauvin made a special visit here from Washington D.C. to help educate
Naperville police on the newest wave of drugs, also called "club drugs" or
"rave drugs" following the death of a Naperville teen in May.

Sara Aeschlimann, a senior at Naperville Central, overdosed on a substance
called paramethoxyamphetamine, known as PMA, when she thought she was
taking ecstasy, a popular club drug.

"Dr. Gauvin is considered a world class expert on designer drugs," said DEA
spokesman Michael Hillebrand.

"The people who attend will get the current information. They will get it
in a form they can understand and they will get a true education on the
drugs that are in our communities."
