DATE SET FOR NEW JERSEY RACE PROFILING DATA

TRENTON, Nov. 9 - Fifteen years worth of state police records dealing with
racial profiling will be made public on Nov. 28, the attorney general, John
J. Farmer Jr., said today.

"That's a firm date," said Mr. Farmer, who had planned to make the records
available last month.

As many as 80,000 pages will be open for inspection. State officials had
estimated there would be 50,000 pages of radio logs, operational reports
and other state police records.

The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, William L. Gormley, had
asked for the records, with Friday as the deadline. Mr. Farmer told him
today that the amount of material made it difficult to meet that deadline.

As workers search for materials to make public, they often find other
undiscovered files on racial profiling, the practice of singling out
minority motorists for drug searches and traffic stops. The materials will
be collected into binders and posted in a public reading room. Copies will
also be available on CD-ROM.

On Sept. 22, the attorney general announced his decision to make the
records public, after months of fighting their release.
