KEEP DARE COP ON BEAT

I have been a sixth-grade teacher for 20 years. I was in the classroom when
the DARE program first started in Bakersfield. I am a huge supporter and
applaud the officers who work with our students throughout the year.

One policeman, above all others, stands out as the ultimate teacher. I have
witnessed many who tried to reach our children, but no one has the
enthusiasm or displays the sincerity to promote the lessons of the program
as well as Officer Jack Smith of the Bakersfield Police Department.

I have recently learned that he is to be rotated out of the DARE program. I
think it unfortunate that such a fine teacher be made to leave this
position because of an internal technicality.

Jack Smith should be made the example. He has the charisma needed to
capture the interest of the students. He is a role model for children and
adults alike.

Rather than take Smith away from the classroom, his talents might be better
utilized by making him a teacher of new officers learning to communicate
with our children.

Yes, I'm a fan. Anyone who has seen Officer Jack at work will agree. The
DARE program needs this man. My students, along with hundreds, perhaps
thousands, of others, have benefitted from knowing and learning from
Officer Smith. We're hoping more thought might be given before taking him
from us.
