WOMAN, 82, ADMITS TRYING TO SMUGGLE DRUGS TO PRISONER SON ST. FRANCISVILLE, La. -- (AP) -- An 82-year-old woman admitted that she tried to smuggle drugs to her son in prison and was ordered to serve a year in prison. Mildred Giovanni pleaded guilty Thursday to possession of contraband in a penal institution. She was arrested in May after guards at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola said she tried to smuggle drugs to Edward L. Giovanni Jr., who is serving three consecutive life sentences for the 1978 slayings of a family from Carlyss. Guards who searched Mildred Giovanni found 39 grams of marijuana and seven grams of cocaine, Warden Burl Cain said. She skipped a Sept. 11 trial date and was arrested about three weeks ago, authorities said.
