CLINTON SHOULD SHIFT POT POLICY The new issue of Rolling Stone magazine contains an interview with President Clinton in which he states, "I think that most small amounts of marijuana have been decriminalized in some places, and should be." It is great to see that he feels this way, but disgusting that under his administration, nearly 700,000 Americans were arrested each year for marijuana possession. Even more disgusting is how members of his administration like drug czar Barry McCaffrey and Health and Human Services head Donna Shalala brutally suppressed the medicinal use of marijuana, arresting patients, thrreatening doctorsa and even asking the Supreme Court to rule against the ancient doctrine of medical necessity. If Clinton truly feels marijuana should be decriminalized, he should act now while he can and not only immediately order marijuana rescheduled so doctors can prescribe it, but also commute the sentences of marijuana offenders now incarcerated in our nation's vast prison system.
