CRACKDOWN NETS 219 ARRESTS

RALEIGH - Police on Friday announced the arrests of 219 people on
hundreds of charges after a 27-day crackdown in east Raleigh.

The effort targeted the Poole Road, New Bern Avenue and Shaw
University areas and involved personnel from all divisions within the
department.

As a result, 850 charges were filed, including 154 drug offenses and
eight sex crimes, said city spokeswoman Jayne Kirkpatrick.

She said a significant amount of illegal materials were seized,
including 1,103 grams of cocaine, 883 grams of marijuana, 13 bundles
of heroin, eight units of ecstasy, $4,575 in cash and two weapons.

The investigation was prompted by citizen complaints of various
nuisances in their neighborhoods, city officials said.

Police used undercover and high-visibility techniques to reduce
illegal activities and arrest offenders, officials said. The Raleigh
Police Department was assisted by other city, county and state agencies.
