No no man, I wasn't agreeing with you at all, that would require a lobotomy. I'm just saying that really, you are pretty obnoxious so if people say that they'd love to torture you I think it's safe to assume that it's a desire that doesn't need to be fulfilled so much as just expressed. So perhaps you want to gloat about having gotten under his skin as well, which proves that you're getting some sick pleasure out of all the drama, and well, I know you're not all that net-savvy but that by definition is trolling and you're doing it entirely to disturb the proverbial excrement.

So yeah, anything you say from here on is probably going to be consistent with that.

I dunno man, I worked a lot of raves as first response for bad trips and otherwise bizarre drug incidents. I saw a lot of fucked up stuff and got to know every dealer in the parties I went to. I don't feel that this forum is really the place to air all the dirty laundry, but ketamine injection used to be a major problem at Toronto parties, and I had to help a lot of people with needles over all that time, though mostly needle exchange for smackheads. When I wasn't dealing with that it would usually be people ODing on ecstasy and not drinking any water, acidheads who had taken way too much and were going psycho, or methheads who needed someone to talk to incessantly at all costs.

While I was most heavily involved in the rave scene (1998-2001) I was dealing with a good friend who had far too much involvement with Satans' while the lead singer and drummer of my band slid into heroin madness. We had gotten our apartment from a really awesome girl who had both her arms cut off for dealing at the wrong party in the mid 90s, who had crossed the Viet mafia turflines. The basement belonged to a crack dealer, and half of the people we knew were alkies or junkies. It was not a pleasant time. I was trying to figure out a different way to party because of the shit I had seen at WEMF, but I had also let a lot of dark and shady characters into my life. I got away with minimal damages, a hole in my head and a hole in the roof, and a bad case of paranoia. It was bad.

At WEMF a double-wielding psycho (two nines) tried to rob the booth I was camped at (THC), the folks I knew in the psy scene had been chased out of Montreal after getting the shakedown from the Riders about their exports, and whenever we made it out to Montreal (mainly around 99, 2000) we used to have Rockers screaming in our faces at any of the parties we hit.

I was working at the Industry, where I witnessed the sketchiest people in the world getting fucked out of their faces, drink doping like you wouldn't believe, and just plain awful, criminal promoters doing whatever the fuck they wanted to. I used to work at the Ascension parties and the shit that would go down made no sense. System Soundbar, where we used to flyer, beat at least five dudes up per Saturday night, and we'd be there on speed and crappy e trying to smile through it all.

When I worked at this weird afterhours called Circuit a bunch of dudes with AK-47s once ran in and robbed the place, then had a shootout in the alleyway next door. I used to work upstairs from there, in a bar called the Charlotte Room, which was the number 2 pool hall in town, as well as a good place to get blow, that is if you didn't want to stroll up to Queen and try your luck at the Bovine Sex Club (aka the Blow Vine).

In a word it was traumatic. For all the fun you could have out there you had to be fucking looped to not notice all the bad vibes. I think that ecstasy smuggling is basically nothing, and not even worthy of print. Way worse shit went down in that scene, but nobody wants to talk about it. I think it's ridiculous how naive and ignorant many people are to the kind of shit that goes on behind the scenes, and denying the truth doesn't make it any less real.

I was walking down Harbord Street in Toronto and there was this mural of children's art, and the piece I still remember the best was the one front and center of the mural. It was a crest, a W-shaped crest, and inside of that, little Jimmy from Harbord Montessori School had written 'Wu-Tang Forever'. So they are totally for the childrens.

Kanye is the Billy Mays of hip hop. Loud and obnoxious, types in caps, and nobody really buys what he's selling.

I do say things like this to people's faces, only they tend to be better at explaining themselves because in those circumstances it's usually clearer what sort of blatant idiocy I'm up against, and generally it's a lot easier for me to walk away if I realize that the other person's obstinate opinion is taking up too much space.

Like let's just suppose that you get high out of your tree and we cross paths at an after-hours, and oh, just so you can act like he's some sort of tough guy who beats up anyone who insults you, let's presume your reluctant husband is there with you.

The conversation goes like this:

Lynzyn: HI I'm ANNOYINg I don't speak propeerly and I YELL THINGS THAT I WANT PEOPLE TO BELIEVE plus i rpeaet myelsf and oh god I havven't even peocessed my thoughts before speaking them. By the way everyone at the parteee! I LOVE TIESTO AND FUCK YOU IF YOU DON'T YAY STEREO YAY SHITTY STUFF AND OH YEAH HIP HO BURNS DOWN CLUBS! HURR DURR!
Me: Do you need meds?
Relunctant hubby: Stop saying that or she will beat me for laughing when we get home.

Is that the scenario you have in mind? If you're that retarded in real life, oh yeah, I will tell you so to your face.

Update » JasonBeastly wrote on Tue Sep 8, 2009 @ 3:47pm
I meantersay they're better at defending themselves in person. People will say "oh that's not exactly what I mean, I mean this and that" in person in order to save face. On a forum it's just a stubborn defense of what you said because you can't rely on people forgetting or missing details like you would in person.

Well whatever, I would love to come diss you to your face but I have more important matters to attend to and they don't involve stupid cows.

ELP wrote some pretty crazy stuff but according to everyone in my father's generation when they would play live Emerson would be between a gigantic Buchla and a miniMoog, and he would basically just play with the ribbon control on some other device, set off pyrotechnics, and basically be like Tiesto in front of his machines, because most of those tweaks are impossible to reproduce except by tape. The old modular synths are notorious for inconsistency. You could leave them at the same settings and the sound would slowly deteriorate because of the nature of transistors.

So in the context of modern day electronic music, they were ahead of their time for sure

Would have loved to have heard the record they did after ;)

[ en.wikipedia.org ]

After the success of The Dark Side of the Moon, the band were unsure of their future direction and worried about how they would be able to top that record's huge popularity. In a return to their experimental beginnings, they began work on a project entitled Household Objects, which would consist of songs played literally on household appliances. Instruments consisted of old hand mixers, rubber bands stretched between two tables, wine glasses, etc. However, the planned album was soon shelved after the band decided that it was just easier and better to play the songs on actual musical instruments. No finished recordings of these sessions exist, however some of the recorded effects were put to use on their next album

Yeah you're right as usual. I suppose that before Pink Floyd there was no electronic music. All that stuff I learned about 30's electroacoustics and musique concrète was probably a lie.

BTW they used the Synthi A (suitcase model) to create that track, a device they were using since Meddle. The first time they used their synths to that degree was on the track "One Of These Days" which opens this album.

Before that epoch they were doing all sorts of weird synth sound over the bizarre orchestrations of Syd Barrett, original member and songwriter/singer of the group. Like many 60's freakout artists they were highly influenced by Acid Jazz (also already using electronics such as tape delays prior to PF) and the music of Karlheinz Stockhausen, much like the Beatles, who were also dabbling in tape music.

So I guess that if you were to say all that in a more educated manner, many of the psychedelic sounds of the sixties were influenced by the electronic experimentations of the late 19th century to 1940's, although most people had not heard synthesizers prior to their usage in psychedelic and progressive rock, when they became a more salient technique.

So yeah, I mean I love Ummagumma too, but the Floyd were basically just rock and roll dudes playing with fancy instruments created by electroacoustics nerds as far as their experiments are concerned.

Wow.

Lynzyn and Bliss do not need to be insulted because they do a fine job making themselves look bad.

So what I got out of this thread is that the Stereo fire was caused by hip-hoppers hired by Circus to take out the competition. What drugs are you guys doing? Nothing I've done in the last 12 years has ever made me that flaky.

Did anyone ever consider the Hells or the Mafia in this business? Considering that on a professional level these are the main organized crime units that would have the gall to do this sort of thing to reopening businesses? I mean, I have no proof for that either but it's as viable at least as thinking it was Crips or Bloods or whatever extension of blaming hip-hop culture, thinly veiled racist remark suggesting that usual fear of a black hat that has been spewing out of people forever on here. Yes, plenty of rap and hip hop has violent content, yadda yadda, but so does metal, hardcore, rock and roll, fuck, even country (I have made this argument before).

I personally blame ravers. I've seen way more violence at raves throughout my lifetime than any other place so I think that it's high time we own up to the fact that we invite a criminal element by being illegal ourselves, by being drug-using and condoning (or at least being tolerant of) use / abuse, by fighting city bylaws against excessive noise, by squatting warehouses or other venues, by accepting an "underground" culture open to anybody interested. I have seen more drug-related violence and violence by bouncers at raves than at any other event, seen more guns and heard about more on-site rape than at any other sort of event, and known firsthand about heavy criminal involvement by promoters and nightlife in this arena. Crystal meth brought a lot of that with it, and no, that wasn't some crazy rap phenomenon. I saw my fair share of sketchy little skinny kids in the rave scene who did a ton of sick and twisted things to their enemies and friends out of a need for ego-fulfillment and severe cocaine or amphetamine psychosis. I'm sure most of you spring chickens of the "since" haven't experienced Taz parties with the Riders barking down your back every time you even consider doing your own supply that you brought from out of town. But it happened, and it was rough.

Don't lie about it for god's sakes. The people who own Montreal's nightlife have far worse things to worry about than a couple of hoodie-wearing stoners who carry guns to look cool. This entire island is run by organized crime. Get over your ignorant drug-addled opinions and read some books. You'll find that it's actually business as usual.

Now I've said my two cents, I expect the usual sort of vindictive and confrontational responses from the two brainiacs that I mentioned above, heaven forbid that either of them would look stupid on the internet.

I think really the only things required for free partying are to respect the TAZ (temporary autonomous zone), respect others and provide for the community, to a certain degree, a level of responsibility, especially the loose rule of "leave no trace" which, frankly, doesn't get a lot of circulation. The point is that you get what you give in this sense. There are a lot of people who use squat areas and charge for them, people who throw parties at old school rave prices when the novelty of the experience passed long ago, which is what led to these smaller turnouts, and the law regarding public, licensed venues did as well.

That being said there are different interpretations of what goes and doesn't in the TAZ. And I'm not sure if it's as formalized in Europe or if it ever was that each sound system should prevent bleeding and projecting sound in the direction of residences or private terrain. It seems to me that the larger a Teknival becomes the more likely it is that some crew will set up annoyingly close to another and two stages will constantly trainwreck into each other. But you definitely don't charge people for anything other than transportation, because as a squatter you have no right to profit from the space itself. Donations are really the only way to get something back ethically in that scene.

The reason why anyone in that scene would criticize people breaking the rules have a lot to do with how anti-capitalist the values of free partying are supposed to be. That doesn't mean that people won't still have money or signs of affluence, but it does mean that there is a code about when and where you can charge. If you have to pay rent, for instance.

And honestly, I wasn't at this party but I heard it sucked, but some people said it was ok. And that was just here. So what do I know? Bad turnouts happen all the time, it's not always the promoters fault but usually has at least a bit to do with promotion vs. public interest. $50 sounds retarded though, for a grimy place, totally retarded.
