Another very big week. All sorts of new bombs, followed by even more new bombs on Thursday. Here’s phase one:

[DRUM & BASS]

DJ Fresh & Adam F – When The Sun Goes Down Part.1 on Breakbeat Kaos.
This was supposed to be the sampler for the Junglesound LP which came out 2 weeks ago, so as you can imagine, it’s late. The good news is, it was worth the wait. This first of 2 twelves features the Original Mix, which has a full vocal and straight up radio vibe, definitely hands in the air for this one. The flip features a badder then bad remix by the one and only Dillinja, pretty typical for the Valve head-honcho, but still a solid thumper nonetheless.

DJ Fresh & Adam F – When The Sun goes Down Part.2 on Breakbeat Kaos.
Origin Unknown (Andy C & Ant Miles) take on remix duties here and as usual, they don’t fail to knock this tune into the stratosphere. Removing all unnecessary vocals and adding the incomparable RAM bassline treatment, they make boys AND girls want to dance…not too many producers can pull that off. Commix take a break from Hospital duties and apply their funky dubby technique to make a phat latin flavored roller out of the original. If I had to pick only one of the two, this would be it.

Various – The Rumba Sessions Vol.2 – Movement.
They should call this the Brazil EP Vol.2, straight up. Patife & Dextrous join forces with MC Fats, Cleveland Watkiss and Mariene De Castro to bring us the anthem right here. ‘Made In Bahia’ is a shuffle-beat vocal monster that will bring any dead dancefloor to life….just try it. E-Z Rollers give us another nice vocal roller in the form of ‘Joy U Give’, while Kenny Ken’s boys Ed Funk & Mace remix Supply & Demand’s ‘Delicious’ (yes, that’s a vocal one too…getting the idea yet?). Finally to round things off, a special treat in remix form from Commix once again, this time taking on DJ Suv’s ‘Suenos Different’. A very funky EP, definitely one for the ladies.

Marky & XRS – Soul Samba/Breeze VIP on In Rotation.
Finally, some new material! The latin vibes seem to be at the top of the list this week. ‘Soul Samba’ is my pick on this one, a simple funky roller, but with that big bass that gives it the weight to work during peaktime sets as well as for opening slots. ‘Breeze VIP’ is by far better then the original, but the drums come off sounding a little square I’m afraid. Still, a solid record with more to come. Keep your eyes peeled for Calibre’s contribution coming soon!

Total Science – Good Game LP on CIA.
The moment I heard these two were putting a new album together I got shivers down my spine. Sure enough, the opening tune ‘West Side Story’ does the same thing to junglists everywhere it’s dropped. While on the whole, this album stays true to their trademark sound, I must say it’s some of the most original material they’ve come up with in years. They even got Jenna G to feature on one of the highlights ‘Kiss Chase’. The album artwork alone merits a laugh too, so come down and check it out.

Various – MDZ.04 on Metalheadz.
I’m not going to pressure you into this one. If you’re into the headz sound then you’re already on your way down. If not, you’re missing out on groundbreaking drums and bone-shattering bass: Photek ‘Age Of Empires’, Skitty ‘I Can’t Describe’, Seba & Lenk ’16 Stories’, Loxy & J Dub ‘Twisted 3rd Mind’ (Keaton & Hive Remix), Spirit ‘Dial Up’, Leon Switch & Kryptic Minds ‘Prejudice & Politics’, Beta 2 ‘Bad Days’, K.OT.P. ‘Secret Fire’. Still not convinced?

That’s it for now, stay in school!

When the going gets tough, the tough get dial-up.

Sorry for the long delay, internet access is something new and exciting for me all over again.... Believe me the timing couldn't be any better. Truckloads of vinyl this week.

[DRUM & BASS]

Bulletproof - Have U Ever/Change Me on Random.
More brand new material from the land down under. Bulletproof rock the disco tip on the a-side and quite well I might add, but the real flavour here is on 'Change Me'. Pure neurofunk for you tech-heads.

Various Artists - Jungle Sound -The Bassline Strikes Back LP on Breakbeat Kaos.
I can't believe you don't own this album yet. you know how I know that? Cuz you're still reading this badly written review! You're looking at the album of the year right here people and you don't even know it yet....check out what you've been missing:
Pendulum - Masochist
Adam F& TKO - Circles VIP 2000
Adam F & TKO - Therapy
DJ Fresh - Hear My Voice
DJ Fresh - Living Daylights
DJ Fresh & Pendulum - Kingston Vampires
Future Prophecies - Dreadlock
Dillinja - You Can't Touch...

The Upbeats - Slit/Fill Me In on BC Presents.
I know you haven't heard of these guys....yet. That's the great thing about labels like these. When you buy BC, you know you're buying the best, top choice drum & bass, no filler. That fact is, Bad Company have made very few bad choices throughout the years and there's no reason to doubt them on this twelve. Solid beats and bass right here, circa 'Inside the machine' era bad co.

DJ Hype, J Majik & Wickaman feat. Daddy Earl - Dubplate Killa/Look To The Future on Ganja.
Hot collaboration biznizz! Infrared's big daddy J Majik joins forced with the original True Playa. Add vocals from the incomparable Daddy Earl and you've got the making of a biiiiig bass thumper, very reminiscent of Metrosound....on steroids!

DJ Ink - The Joint EP on Renegade Hardware.
All I gotta say is, this guy definitely smokes a lot of weed man. Dirty drums and pounding bass, in a Dylan stylee. No crazy stand out tunes, but no shitty ones either. Check the heavier then heavy Spirit remix of 'B-Boy Convention'.

SKC & Safair/Chris Su - Gonzo/Sublime on Orgone.
Hungarians are taking over man! Seriously though, these guys are in top form everywhere. All 3 of these cats alongside Longman and Bratwa make up Tactile, the ultimate dancefloor destruction crew hailing from Budapest. Check the hard tech business on 'Gonzo' for the Foufs crowd, or flip it for some hot vocal fuelled tech-funk that will rock ANY crowd.

Krust - Follow Da Vision/Paper Monster on Full Cycle.
The lone bass warrior comes with his hottest tune in ages and keeps it straight and simple. Some might criticize Full Cycle for putting out some boring tunes, and I'm the first to admit that...but when you've got a good loop going, sometimes it's best to just let it ride, and that's exactly what this tune does. Sweet.

Total Science - Prozac (Q Project Remix)/Chicken Lips on CIA.
Nice new material from the dynamic duo, this one being a sampler for the forthcoming album 'Good Game'. Let's face it, either you like these boys or you don't, and this single won't change your mind. But you know what, I bet the album will turn a few heads, I personally think it's the best thing they've done in the past few years.

Noisia/Noisia + Milo + Prolix - Mindstorm/Timechaser on Shadow Law Ltd.
If you though Muffler was busy lately, you ain't seen nothing yet. With this being one of many hot singles forthcoming from this Dutch trio. I definitely prefer 'Timechaser' here....very funky vibes and a killer second drop make for a memorable record all around. Keep your eyes peeled for more new Noisia tunes coming on Fokuz Ltd, Citrus, and of course the jaw-dropping 'Vanishing Point' coming soon.

Nightbreed - Pack Of Wolves (Pendulum RMX)/(Matrix RMX) on RAM.
Damn...and you thought metal 'n bass was dead! Ok, maybe it is, but you can't deny a heavy rock 'n roll influence on this tune. Pendulum obviously rip this thing apart, duh. Matrix however applies a slightly more subtle touch and provides an excellent alternative to the earth-shattering standout. There's also a limited copy of the original version of 'Pack Of Wolves' available on 7" red vinyl for you collectors out there.

Rodney P - Trouble (Roni Size Remix) on Riddim Killa.
Roni adds his midas touch to yet another brit hop joint, using the vocal sparingly in the intro and keeping it simple yet dancefloor effective. Ok...it's not that good. Sorry, I just feel I have to try and say something nice about EVERY tune, but sometimes I just can't. This one's mediocre at best.

Crystal Clear - No Sell Out/Reactive on Sonix.
What's with everyone still loving this new wave jump-up stuff? Didn't we used to laugh at how Aphrodite's tunes all sounded the same? Well have a listen boys and girls, it's happening again! While this tune benefits from having excellent production and a decent vibe going on, it simply doesn't bring anything new to the table.

Teebee - The Legacy LP on Subtitles.
While Future Prophecies album was split up into 3 parts, Teebee's not one to let you pick and choose when it comes to his material. It's all or nothing here, weighing in at a nice 4 discs, the good news is this album is very solid. The 'Liquid Light' remix lives up to the hype, as does 'Sick!'. The only downside is perhaps that all these tunes are very much in the same vein, but hey, that's what we like him for right? Consistency.

Tali - Airport Lounge (Artificial Intelligence RMX)/(Freestylers RMX) on Full Cycle.
A.I. can simply do no wrong at the moment, with tunes on V, 31 Records, Commercial Suicide, heck, they've even done a remix for house hero Eric Prydz (Slammin!). Now they come and fix up what I think is one of the worst tunes on Tali's album. And what an excellent job they do, getting rid of most of the terrible vocal and of course fixing the fact that the original isn't even at d&b tempo, and you've got a winner. Too bad I can't say the same for Freestyler's terrible breakbeat rework.

Tactile - Spade/Helloween on Avalanche.
More hot material from Hungary. Excellent dub fusion going on all over this record, these guys have really honed their skills, showing how they can flex on any style with ease. Both sides of this record have that classic Digital & Spirit vibe going that seems to be all but gone from today's drum & bass. Keep your eyes peeled for more new tunes from these guys on Function and Inneractive.

Various - Uprising EP Vol.1 on Uprising.
Concord Dawn take a chance with their label and try to showcase some up and coming talent with the double-pack of hard d&b. France's own Le Lutin starts things off with one dark twisted tune called 'Bande De Bouffons', and newcomer Mindgame make a nice debut with 'Red Queen'. Sketchy (one part of Rawthang) shows some excellent funk fuelled tech-step on 'Satisfaction'. But the real standout here is the completely unpronounceable Oxy.Gen tune 'Czemu Gdy' remixed by Simba, which simply must be heard to be enjoyed....hands in the air!

High Contrast - High Society LP on Hospital.
Love him or hate him, High Contrast has definitely changed the way we look at drum & bass. This album further provides us with dancefloor ammo and some really sweet home listening stuff too. I highly suggest picking up this LP, even if you're only mildly interested in this thing we call jungle, grab the CD and have a listen. You'll be a blue dog punter in no time.

Jammin - Kinda Funky (Shimon RMX)/Go DJ (Zinc RMX) on Bingo.
Shimon adds the much needed RAM flavour to this record and is absolutely on fire right now! With a much anticipated remix on the way for the one and only DJ Hype as well, you'd think the True Playaz camp knows something the RAM boys don't eh? Both sides are solid as a rock.

That's it for know, cuz my fingers are BLEEDING. As usual, all these records (and many more!) can be found at DNA Records, you're one-stop shop for Drum & Bass, Electro, House, Techno, Breaks, Hip Hop, and limited edition Jordan Dare wind-up dolls.

This week as you may or may not have heard (the rumours were nice though) will be the last week of Drum & Bass....at Saphir at least. I'd like to thank everyone who's been supporting this night from the beginning, you all know who are. As a sort of "fond farewell" I'll be giving away all the free gear I've got left in my bag, all the free booze I can scam from the bar, and playing as many classic hits and new bombs I dig out of my collection. I've invited Sase One to join me in my quest, and there may be one more special guest joining us....but he's not confirmed yet. Hi all,

In the spirit of trying to better serve Montreal's music scene, we've gone and grabbed all our crap and moved around the corner, into a bigger and better (note: cleaner!) location. DNA Records as well as MOOG Audio are now more accessible then ever! We're located right on the main just above Pine Ave:

3828 St-Laurent Blvd.

Some of you may notice that it's the same location as the old St-Laurent bakery, which shut down not too long ago...but not to worry, The old fashioned tile floor was left untouched so we never forget who was there first! You may also notice that we've also taken on a new neighboor, by the name of Goodfoot. Goodfoot has been supplying Toronto with limited edition and rare sneakers for little while now and they've decided to open another location right here in Montreal. You can learn more about them at [ www.getonthegoodfoot.ca ]

Also, DNA will now be carrying Hip Hop. Now when I say we'll be carrying it, I don't mean, "oh we got one or two records in dude", I mean we're CARRYING it. All the new jiggy shit, all the hard to find indy shit, all the old school jams you need to rock a party, we've got...yeah that's right...we've got it NOW. Half the store is hip hop now people...serious. To all our regular customers, all I can say is that this move will in no way take away from the current styles we already carry, it's only getting bigger and better I promise.

We've got new record bins, new listening posts (6 of 'em!), a new sound system, and...yes...new staff. Along with the usual suspects: Jacob, Jordan, Matt & Myself, DR-ONE will be taking care of all things phat and funky.

Hope to see you soon!

After a few weeks of being way too busy (lazy), and not too many new records coming in, I thought it might be a good idea to get back to business...and let you know how insane this week will be! On top of the shit you're about to see, there will be another MASSIVE shipment of vinyl coming in on Friday, so watch this space!

[DRUM & BASS]

Dom & Roland - Chronology LP on Moving Shadow.
This is the baddest shit we've had in the store for some time now. For those of you who like your beats ruff, and your bass ruffer, this album is for you. Features guest appearances by only the top bad boys: Skynet, Dieselboy, Karl K & Jae Kennedy, and even Hive pulling off the sickest remix of Parasite and Adrenaline combined!

Dom & Roland - Dance All Night/Just So You Know on Moving Shadow.
The biggest tune from the album, not available on the 4-pack vinyl, this one is gonna take you right back to the days of 'Can't Punish Me' and blow your mind!

Dom & Roland - Dance All Night (Calyx RMX)/Freak Seen on Moving Shadow.
Damn....now Calyx is getting in on the dancefloor obliteration. Flip this puppy over and get a dose of pure warm funky bass, mixed with aggresive rolling breaks. My pick of them all.

DJ Fresh - Submarines/Pendulum RMX on Breakbeat Kaos.
Do I honestly have to tell you about this tune? Listed as one of the top ten tunes of all time on DOA, right up there with legendary "unreleased" bombs like Fucking Hostile. Nobody ever thought this tune would see the light of day....dude, my mom is freaking out right now....i [ swear...ca ] her! Ok don't. Seriously though, this tune was made during the 'Digital Nation' sessions of Bad Comany and was simply shelved for a later date. Fast forward 3 years and that date has finally arrived! Pendulum help school all the heads by updating this trancey number with their trademark sound....not to be missed by ANYONE...no excuses this time people!

KDS Feat. Robbie Craig - Experience (ill.skillz RMX/John B RMX) on Breakout.
Something for everyone on this brand new label. Ill.skillz take the piss out of the original male-vocal-tinged number and scare you to pieces. John B embraces the soulful vibe and makes it funky and fun. What's left to say...one side fits all.

Calyx - Inner Distance EP on Metalheadz.
With his moment finally arriving, Calyx takes a look back at some ruffer sounds, very reminiscent of the early 'Headz days. Features a guest appearance from his mate Kontrol as well as newcomer OB1.

Silent Witness - Safeway/Streetlight on Obscene.
Dylan's new Freak Recordings offshoot already started off with a bang from B-Key a few short weeks ago. Next up is the technical mastery of Silent Witness. After dropping hotness on DNAudio as well as Klute's Commercial Suicide imprint, you know exactly what to expect. Total annihilation.

Various - The Reloaded EP (Part 1) on Renegade Hardware.
I'm not going to use fancy words to confuse you into buying this one. I'm just going to let the tunes speak for themselves:
Loxy & Dylan - Fraggle Rock (Raiden RMX)
Paradox - A Certain Sound (Drumworkz VIP)
Future Cut - Ghetto Style (Evol Intent RMX)
Loxy & Ink - Straight Up Menace (VIP Mix)

For those of you who haven't stopped by in the last two weeks, we still have copies of RAM Raiders vol.6 and that new Zinc jam 'Flim' featuring Slarta Jon, so get 'em while you still can!
Breaks will be put up tomorrow.

Aquasky will be doing one of his famous 'hybrid' sets, starting off with breaks and then shifting gears into d&b. It should be a wicked event.

MOOG Audio & Circus Present:

a Shake & Break Special Event

Aquasky [UK]
Corey K
Soundshaper
Main Room
1:30am-10:30am

Since the early 90's Aquasky has been a permanent fixture in the breakbeat music scene. After a string of successful singles they dropped the critically acclaimed Drum & Bass LP 'Bodyshock' in 1999, followed by the formidable 'Aftershock' remix album shortly thereafter. Wanting to further explore their sound, Aquasky made their foray into breaks, the summer of 2002 saw their 'Beat The System' LP dropping jaws worldwide, and last year their 'Stayfresh' album secured their position as one of the top breakbeat acts on the planet. When they're not too busy making tunes or running their three labels, Aquasky enjoy touring the countryside and rocking dancefloors for large crowds of people. July 30th it's Montreal's turn.

Stephane, Corey & Pascal would like to thank everyone who's helped to make Shake & Break what it is today. What started as an idea has become a reality, join the entire crew as we take our 4 turntables, CD Players, Effects, and earth shattering bass to Circus.

The Next Level @ Saphir

Weekly night of Drum & Bass, 2-Step, lying on the floor, partial nudity, shaking hands, drinking WAY too much, shaking asses, and Carolineisthebestbartenderever.

This week's guest: JD Dyslexic
Some of you may remember Dyslexic making people go crazy at Blue Dog not too long ago...but since then he's gone into hiding. Taking refuge in a small cave just north of the Orange Julep near the Decarie Expressway, Dyslexic has been honing his skills in secrecy. After making the trek over to his cave, I requested a rare public appearance. He yelled at me...for a while....then he said yes! Woot!

This weeks EXTRA special guest: The Evolve Banner!
The Next Level crew is proud to announce the triumphant return of the prestigious Evolve Banner. Like the pheonix it will now rise again, but not covered in flames....more like covered in tears of joy, cuz we're so happy it's back!

The pissing contest was figurative.

The drinking contest was literal.
