those random walls don't get cleaned cause the gov. doesn't have money to blow on it, and it's not in the public's view often. (like along highways)..

it isn't supressing anyone..

if i put up a poster on a wall that doesn't belong to me, then the owner takes it down.. is that him supressing me? no.. it's him retaking what's his.

no it's not, but that is COMPLETLY FUCKING DIFFERENT...there are dedicated graff walls, which, are left up, not because the gov doesn't have funds to clean (what kind of joke is that?)
but they're there so that the artists can express their works in a way that that lets the public see it and stays true to the art form...

and why would you want to take a peice of art down, when all that will be left is a blank depressing wall, if people aren't putting up ugly tags, or lewd pictures, then what your problem with them???

just cause you dislike Eldar?

i never said i dislike eldar..

he's just being a jerk to me online..

anyway, those pulic wall are fine. if they were designated so.

But tagging happens in SO many other places than those. I see tags in parks and on statues.. (which are also 'art', being defaced) and just about everywhere else.. thats my malfunction, is that so many taggers don't have any respect for other people's property. which makes it vandalism.

hey, i posted it before, i agree with you, i hate tags, i think they're ugly, but genuine graffiti, is a great addition to mtl, just tagging is fucking pretty lame

The tags and murals that the public sees is just the tip of the iceberg. Most of them are done under highway passes and abandonned factories.

Graff is the greates adrenaline rush there is, be it legal or illegal.

I will make one exception though.. whoever blackened the "L" in peel and turned it into "pee" is a fucking genius and for some reason they haven't bothered fixing that yet... It's always a laugh when I go by peel metro now...

even at atwater they took out the, a,e,and r- so it says "twat"

Graffiti has been around for a hell of a long time. Cave drawings are a form of vandalism. Sure, the concept of government and personal property were only basic ideas, it's the same thing.

I'm a vandal. I tag buses, metros, mailboxes, etc. I pay for my buspass and I pay my taxes. I draw the line at vandalizing private property. I wouldn't want some toy busting a tag on my bedroom window, so I don't do it to someone else. The majority of taggers/writers/vandals feel the same way. As Eldee said, people who vandalize private property, churches, hospitals, etc are very looked down in our community.

Graffiti is a lose-lose situation. Even if you somehow convince me, or Eldee or Mico to stop, 10 others will take our place. The government, STM, etc spend millions of dollars a year cleaning it up. Why? Because people like you whine about it. And what happens when they clean it up? We're given a blank slate to bust another tag or throw on. It's an endless cycle. We vandalize, you clean, we vandalize, etc. We're not going to stop. Vandals have been around before government and society were around.

As Eldee said, there are many more important things that tax money can be spent on then cleaning graffiti. Education, hospitals, roads, subsidized housing, etc.

definetly, but tags, are fucking dirty, i've gotta say, i hate tags, fine it's a way of getting your name around, but really theres not much talent in putting up you sig, especially when people decide to put they tag up 20 times in a row...i will go from defending graff, to siding against it...

there IS a limit to what should be bombed...taggin, shouldn't really be up there

gordo, i do agree with you in some respects. i'm a very cynical vandal. i know it's illegal. i know why it's illegal. i don't have some bullshit "i'm fighting the system" attitude.
i see vandalism in the same light i see drugs. so much money and time is wasted fighting both, and as the time and money spent increases, so do the crimes. people are going to paint and people are going to smoke weed or shoot up heroin no matter what the government does.
so instead of fighting it, they should regulate it. the city needs more legal walls, just like it needs safe shooting clinics.
i think it's absurd my tax dollars are being spent cleaning graffiti off a mailbox when they could be spent improving the mail service. instead of cleaning it off the metros and buses, they could give their mechanics raises to avoid strikes. instead of spending cash cleaning off of street signs and city walls, they should be subsidizing housing for the poor or funding hospitals or repairing our streets or funding our schools.

sure, a lot of vandalism can look like shit. but would you rather have a clean wall and a shitty education or a dirty wall and a good education?

damn right i'd rather see tax dollars go to the right choices...
this city always seems to be stuck in a kind of tug o war with what we believe in, and aestetic values somewhat forced upon us by others (alot by the states)

the city spent nearly 500 000, or 1 000 000, (my facts aren't clear, thus they are not facts) cleaning up after castro and the vc crew
